Summary
Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) School of Medicine (SOM) develops diverse, compassionate physician leaders and educators who provide expert patient-centered care to diverse populations, supported by evidence-based practice and scientific innovation. The SOM offers programs that cover the learning continuum from Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), Graduate Medical Education (GME) to Continuing Professional Development (CPD). In addition, SOM also offers MD/PhD and Baccalaureate/MD programs.
Baylor's UME program has an accelerated, integrated approach to teaching the core scientific concepts that underlie medicine and our exceptionally diverse clinical training opportunities combine to create a curriculum that prepares our students for success. Commencing with AY2023-2024, the UME program will expand to Temple, Texas (BCM Temple), in partnership with Baylor Scott and White Health (BSWH). Baylor Scott & White Health is prepared to support the program with its expansive clinical enterprise with a focus on value-based care that features a 640-bed teaching and research hospital with a Level I trauma center. As a part of a large multi-specialty integrated physician group located in central Texas, students at BCM Temple are able to serve a diverse population and be exposed to the full spectrum of medical care. The campus also has established GME programs which have been training residents and fellows for over 100 years. There are more than 40 residency and fellowship programs accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education training nearly 500 active GME residents and fellows.

Job Purpose
The Associate Dean of Admissions and Students – BCM, Temple Campus provides leadership and management of the integrated Offices of Admissions, Student Affairs, and Student Services at the BCM Temple campus. This position will provide strategic leadership for medical school programs, admissions and services that foster the academic success and professional development of students enrolled in the medical school at the Temple campus. To that end, the Associate Dean will work closely with UME program leadership and BCM education mission leadership to design and implement comparable processes and services for students at the Temple campus.
The Associate Dean also ensures that the BCM SOM Temple campus satisfies the expectations of relevant accreditation groups, including but not limited to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC).
This position will primarily work in Temple, Texas with some occasional travel to Houston, Texas.
Job Duties - General
- Serve as a member of the Regional Dean’s executive staff and interact with and coordinate activities with other Deans and Leadership
- Ensure areas for which they are responsible at the Temple campus meets or exceeds the LCME and SACSCOC standards for accreditation
- Works collaboratively with the faculty leadership and staff engaged in admissions, student affairs, and student services to fulfill responsibilities
- Recruit faculty at Temple to participate and engage with the committees, services and activities of the UME program
- Meet regularly with Student and Student Leadership; communicate via multiple modalities information important to the student body
- Maintain good relationships and communicate regularly with the curricular deans, office of general counsel, alumni office, financial aid office, communications/marketing, admissions office, student services/diversity office, registrar office
- Serve as an ad hoc non-voting member of the Admissions Committee, Curriculum Committee and Promotions Committee
- Actively participate in other subcommittee work as assigned by the Dean or Regional Dean
- Attends state/national meetings to stay abreast of changes/trends in the Admissions and student affairs
- Maintain job descriptions and provide annual performance reviews for all faculty and staff reporting to you and provide annual performance
- Administers the Office’s operations, resources, and budget to support accountability and a dynamic service focus and an openness of communication and transparency in decision making and information
- Advocate, as appropriate, for students’ needs and interests
- Engage in ongoing planning and continuous quality improvement processes that establish short and long-term programmatic goals, result in the achievement of measurable outcomes that are used to improve programmatic quality
- Effective representation of the school of medicine throughout the community, the state of Texas, and the academic/medical communities of the United States
Job Duties - Student Affairs
- Advise individual students and student groups, such as student organizations
- Provide counseling, triage and refer appropriately for academic, personal and faculty related student problems
- Provide career counseling in collaboration with the career, the learning community advisors, and specialty mentors for students
- Oversee student programs such as matriculation, graduation, white coat, Match Day and other events
- Oversee Learning Community and Specialty Specific mentor program in regards to curriculum, advisor/mentor milestones for career development, residency applications
- Oversee Intersession and Service-Learning Program
Job Duties - Student Services
- Oversight of the integrated enrollment services (registrar, financial aid) in collaboration with the integrated enrollment services leader on the main campus to ensure service delivery consistency
- Communication with student mental health, Title IX, Disability Services to ensure programs are meeting student needs
- Oversight of the career services and student academic success center in collaboration with the leadership of the Career Development Center and Academic Success Center on the main campus to ensure service delivery consistency
- Serve as ex officio on the student services committee
Job Duties - Admissions
- Oversee the admissions process including operational planning and development at BCM-Temple
- Participate in recruitment events sponsored by undergraduate institutions in the state of Texas in conjunction with BCM-TMC admissions
- Work with Baylor’s public affairs department to communicate information to all stakeholders’ regarding the admissions process (i.e. Board, advisors, public, prospective students, etc.)
- Ensure that members of the admissions committee and AIS members are oriented/educated/trained/updated on the policies, processes of the committee, on interviewing, the selection criteria for applicants, and how to review and present applicants for admission.
- Support the holistic admissions processes and other innovative strategies to optimize admission, matriculation, and the support and enhancement of a diverse student body which will meet the BCM’s mission and its mission-appropriate diversity groups.
- Analyze admission data and future student performance and make recommendations for student participation in the pre-matriculation program
- Provide oversight of the programs with a conditional admission component.
- Provide programmatic support to the Admissions Interviewing Subcommittee and members of the Admissions Committee during the interview and selection process.
Minimum Qualifications
- M.D., D.O. and/or M.D./ Ph.D. degrees and board certification in their specialty
- Demonstrated a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness in leadership and possess the ability to work with a varied group of educators and stakeholders
- At least five years of prior experience in medical school administration, preferably medical student education
- Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to lead and work on a team
- Proven success in the ability to collaborate with all administrative levels within health science institutions, the ability to work effectively with learners, staff, and faculty and the ability to lead and work on a team
- Experience in successfully working in a complex, fast-paced environment.
- Accomplished and effective communicator: superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, group presentation skills, and proven ability to work with diverse constituencies.
