Job Description

The College of Aviation (COA) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University—Daytona Beach invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean, School of Graduate Studies (SGS). The College seeks a dynamic, nationally recognized academic leader with an established record of scholarship and practical experience in the discipline of aviation.  The Associate Dean will partner with the faculty in the successful leadership of the School of Graduate Studies.  This position is at our Campus in Daytona Beach, FL and is a 12-month, tenured appointment.

The School of Graduate Studies within the College of Aviation offers the world’s first and largest Ph.D. in Aviation with over 70 active students, and academic degrees at the Masters level in Aviation Science, Occupational Safety, Space Operations and Unmanned Systems.  The Ph.D. in Aviation has both an online and residential presence with students from around the world.  The Masters programs are residential and taught at the Daytona Beach campus.

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Aviation, the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies will be responsible for providing academic leadership in the development of academic programs in support of the School, College, Campus, and University mission as well as participating in student recruitment, enrollment and retention efforts as required. The Associate Dean will serve on the leadership team for the COA, develop and maintain channels of communication with industry and professional groups in order to ensure that the degree programs are providing appropriate educational preparation for the students. The Associate Dean will also maintain academic excellence in the College’s teaching and scholarly efforts, to include demonstrating scholarship through publication and funded research, providing criteria and oversight for approving faculty, evaluating teaching effectiveness, and assessing program effectiveness.

Qualifications

Consideration of applications will begin in February 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. 

 

  • The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. A PhD in Aviation or related area is preferred.
  • A record of distinguished:
    • Teaching,
    • Demonstrated success chairing theses and dissertations,
    • External research funding and research program leadership consistent with a senior, tenured faculty appointment,
    • Recognized scholarship and publication in academic journals in aviation or closely related area, and
    • Will have recognized service at the National/International level
  • Demonstrated successful experience as a Department Chair, Associate Dean, or Dean in a four-year institution of higher education focused on teaching, research, and service (preferred).
  • Have attained Tenure and attained the academic rank of Professor (preferred)
