The College seeks an Associate Dean. This position reports to the Dean of the Honors College. The College is committed to inclusive excellence and particularly welcomes applicants with experience building learning environments where diverse life experiences and perspectives are valued, community members learn with and from each other, and all individuals can thrive.
Duties and Responsibilities
Service and Leadership: Serves as member of the Honors College leadership team. Works with the Dean, Assistant Dean, and Director of Student Engagement to provide strategic leadership. Participates in college committee work and represents the Honors College on university committees, as appropriate.
Curriculum and Course Scheduling: Plans and manages Honors College curriculum, including course scheduling and oversight of Honors Curriculum and Instruction process. Builds and maintains relationships with the General Education program and academic unit heads across campus to provide a broad array of Honors course offerings. Hires and supervises adjunct faculty; manages onboarding, evaluation, and offboarding.
Faculty and Academic Unit Engagement with Honors: Collaborates with JMU faculty on new courses and revisions to existing courses. Manages Honors capstone processes. Serves as primary point of contact for Honors College instructors and to JMU academic departments. Facilitates faculty professional development related to Honors education.
Admissions: Coordinates Honors College admissions process for incoming first-year students, current JMU students, and transfer students.
Advising: Oversees Honors College advising team to ensure students receive high-quality, indivualized, and holistic advising to support retention and completion.
Assessment: Works with the Honors team to develop and implement assessment protocols for Honors College curricular experiences to measure attainment of objectives and drive program improvement. Assessment should ascertain needs, participation, and accomplishment of learning objectives. Assessment results should inform resource allocation and program improvement.
Inclusive Excellence: Works collaboratively with the college leadership team to develop, benchmark, and manage initiatives designed to broaden access to Honors education and foster inclusion.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the needs of the college.
Qualifications
Required
The successful candidate will possess a terminal degree in a relevant discipline and hold an appointment as a full-time JMU faculty member in the Division of Academic Affairs. They will have a strong record of teaching, scholarship, and service and demonstrated commitments to inclusive excellence, interdisciplinary training, and undergraduate research/creative activity. The ideal candidate will have experience in academic leadership, curriculum development, and assessment. The search committee also seeks evidence of success in collaboration across multiple units or colleges, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a variety of constituents.
Preferred
  • Prior engagement with the JMU Honors College as instructor, liaison, capstone advisor/mentor, or reader.
  • Appointment at rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor, with tenure.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
