Position Summary
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) is a research-intensive institution with grants and contracts totaling $1.2 billion in fiscal year 2022. The UNC-CH Adams School of Dentistry (ASOD) has an established history in successfully acquiring grant support and access to research resources. Faculty members are distinguished by their academic accomplishments and interdisciplinary collaborations. UNC-CH is one of only a handful of public universities having schools of the health-related disciplines: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Public Health, and Social Work on a contiguous campus, which encourages exchanges that enhance the resources of individual researchers and facilitates interdisciplinary research collaborations.
The Associate Dean for Research will be charged with leading and overseeing the ongoing development of our research portfolio, including identifying new areas of research, mentoring early-career and mid-career faculty, overseeing research ethics and compliance and infrastructure needs, advancing and pursuing research funding, and innovation opportunities. The Associate Dean for Research will work with the Dean and leadership to set strategic priorities for research and establish a vision for future growth and success for ASOD research. The individual must consider this administrative role a primary appointment with commitment to the school’s research enterprise and the research strategy and will have administrative support from a grants manager and staff.
The Associate Dean for Research will lead an innovative and collaborative research enterprise of the ASOD and serve as the administrative leader of the Office of Research, Discovery, and Innovation (ORDI). The ORDI provides services related to grant and contract submissions, post-award grants management, human subjects research guidance, and general oversight of research facilities. The Associate Dean for Research will work alongside the school’s leadership and divisions in strategic planning and implementation of a research plan that fulfills the mission and vision of the ASOD and facilitating and sustaining an optimal research and research training environment whereby the ASOD’s faculty, students, research fellows, and visiting scholars generate new knowledge in the basic, applied, and clinical sciences, as well as in the areas of health services, health policy, and health education and research. The Associate Dean for Research represents the ASOD research across the university and seeks to identify opportunities for collaboration with units and faculty across UNC-Chapel Hill. The Associate Dean for Research must recognize and promote the value of team science and embrace an entrepreneurial mindset in all aspects of the role.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated record of leadership success, including experience in administering a unit, such as a department, supervising faculty development or faculty mentoring, knowledge of human resources and outstanding communication skills.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership in research and commitment to building research. The successful candidate should have mentored faculty across the academic continuum with the ability to provide inclusive mentorship to early and mid-career investigators as well as train established investigators. The individual should have a research program that aligns with or expands upon UNC-CH strategic research priorities (https://research.unc.edu/about/) and complements the focus on oral and craniofacial health sciences. Successful applicant must foster and facilitate research collaborations that create opportunities for multi-investigator program projects representing strategic research priorities.
