Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
In 2022, UNC Chapel Hill launched the School of Data Science and Society (SDSS), a new school devoted to data science teaching, research, scholarship, service, and creativity. The SDSS vision is to be a leader in shaping the field of data science through an interdisciplinary and rigorous grounding in theory and methods with a human centric approach to the entire data life cycle.
The mission of SDSS is to empower a diverse community of faculty conducting research in the fundamentals and/or the applications of data science. The school is training undergraduate, graduate, and professional students to be the next generation of data science leaders with the knowledge and skills to thrive in this data-driven world. The SDSS will serve the state, the nation, and the world through premier data science educational programs and innovative research directed to advancing the public good with human-centric and ethical applications.
The core elements of the SDSS include porous borders – leveraging our low-walled collaborative Carolina culture to solve major societal problems. Interdisciplinary research clusters that cross disciplines and school boundaries are a vital element of the school. The SDSS is focused on students and education – the emphasis is not just on data science majors but on all students becoming data literate. The school’s culture has an open and transparent structure, governance, and business model.
Position Summary
INTERNAL ONLY: Internal Posting for Current UNC-Chapel Hill Permanent Employees, Time-Limited Employees, Temporary Employees (Directly Hired by UNC-Chapel Hill – Not Employed by a Third-Party Staffing Agency), University Temporary Services (UTS) Employees (Employed by UNC-Chapel Hill) and Layoff Priority Candidates of UNC-Chapel Hill.
The Associate Dean for Finance and Administration in the School of Data Science and Society (SDSS) at UNC Chapel Hill will serve as the main financial and operations officer for the School. They will facilitate and participate in budget planning, financial management, monitoring, analysis, and financial reporting in the School. They will also manage an internal multi-year, multi-fund budget using budget models to project future revenue (student fees, endowment income, expendable trust, F&A, receipts, contracts and grants) and expenditures.
The Associate Dean, as head of the operations team, is primarily responsible for managing daily financial and administrative operations of the School. This includes managing administrative staff and technical personnel in the following operational groups: finance and research administration, IT and facilities services, and human resources. The position will also require careful and regular coordination and interactions with School leadership in the Office of the Dean of SDSS. This individual will play a critical role in the implementation and success of SDSS.
This position also works closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs to ensure the most effective stewardship of resources necessary to promote the priorities of the School.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience in supervising staff related to organizational management, including the ability to set, measure, and achieve strategic objectives. Experience in creating and managing multi-million dollar budgets. Must be able to project a strong positive image of the School through interaction with all constituencies conducting business with the School. Demonstrated ability to problem solve.
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience in working with persons from diverse backgrounds is required, as is experience in an academic or research environment.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Should be skilled in using financial management software commonly used in higher education; experience in PeopleSoft is preferred. Demonstrated experience promoting a diverse workforce is preferred. A successful track record of innovation is preferred.
Strategic financial planning abilities are preferred, as is experience managing budgets in an academic or research environment.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
