Organizational Unit Overview
The College of Education consists of six academic departments that offer seventeen undergraduate degree programs, twenty-two graduate degree programs, six programs for advanced certification, and the Ed.D. program in educational leadership. Also, the College of Education includes the Office of Educator Preparation, the Office of Clinical Experiences and Alternative Licensure, the Office of Assessment, Data Management and Digital Learning, the COE Academic Success Center, the Latham Clinical Schools Network, Partnership Teach, the Maynard Scholars Program, the ECU Center for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics, and the Rural Education Institute.
The mission of the College of Education is the preparation of professional educators and allied practitioners, including professionals in business information systems, counseling, electronic media, and librarianship. Significant to this mission is a strong commitment to three important related areas, all of which are realized through partnerships and other endeavors. These three areas are:
1. the encouragement and nurturing of professional growth for educators and allied practitioners at all levels and in all areas of the educational endeavor;
2. a continuing emphasis on and support for scholarship and research/creative activity;
3. and service in all areas of professional education.
Critical to such commitment is the promotion of effective teaching; staff participation in the improvement of schools; and, in concert with other state agencies, the development and creation of educational policy for North Carolina.
Job Duties
The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Graduate Education will provide visionary leadership to advance the faculty of the College, as well as oversight for space utilization and facilities of College buildings. This individual will serve as a liaison among the College of Education and the University in matters related to graduate education; reports directly to the Dean; is an integral part of the Dean’s staff; and works closely with the Office of Faculty Excellence, Office of the Provost, and Graduate School, among other university units, as well as the Leadership Team inside the college.
The Associate Dean will work effectively with faculty/staff to: facilitate the ongoing development of a rich and engaged faculty community committed to improving education and services for the citizens of the region and oversee and manage processes and tasks related to COE personnel, COE IT resources and support, and COE space and facilities. Work under the general direction of the Dean of the College of Education and collaborate with the other members of the leadership administrative team to support the mission of the College. Serve as designee representing the Dean as requested. Other duties as assigned by the Dean.
60% Leadership: Provide leadership in, and oversight of, graduate academic curriculum and course development; academic quality assurance; graduate student services; graduate student appeals and grievances; and graduate student recruitment and retention. Oversee activity related to faculty credentialing, graduate faculty status, promotion and tenure, and post-tenure review. Oversee activities related to faculty personnel matters, facilities, and technology support. Other duties as assigned by the Dean.
25% Professional Service: College of Education service; promotion of the development of the College and University through participation in College and University committees, faculty and chair candidate interviews, and administrative/leadership team meetings. Professional Society Service; aiding in the recognition of the college through participation in the governance process of appropriate professional societies. Participate in scholarly activities and professional services as required of members of the University faculty community. Other duties as assigned by the Dean.
15% Professional Knowledge: Assist the Dean in maintaining smooth, efficient, and effective operations in the College. Help to ensure compliance with policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes in policy or procedures that lead to overall improvement and quality enhancement; and handle confidential problems that arise in the college. Assist Dean in providing mentorship to department chairs and directors. Other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Minimum Education/Experience
Doctoral degree in one of the disciplines in the College of Education and sufficient scholarly and academic achievement to be eligible for an appointment as a tenured full or associate professor; established record of effectiveness at or beyond the department level in strategic planning, administrative processes, academic policy, graduate education, management; and excellent communication skills. Qualifying degrees must be conferred, and received from, appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of the different degree programs in College of Education and the opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration; strong creative and collaborative leadership skills; strong knowledge of university organizations; ability to build effective working relationships with community constituents; and a desire to work as a part of an administrative team both inside the College of Education and in the university community at-large.
