Job Description

The Associate Dean for Clinical Research (ADCR) is the UNR Med executive leader setting the mission and vision for clinical research activities and reports directly to the Senior Associate Dean of Research. The Chief Clinical Research Officer (CCRO) is the Institutional Official of Renown Health and reports to the Chief Academic Officer. This ADCR/CCRO role is a full-time academic faculty appointment employed by both UNR Med and Renown Health. The ADCR/CCRO leads strategic planning, goal setting, and implementation of the infrastructure, processes and systems to support efficient and high-quality clinical research within the context of the Affiliation Agreement between UNR Med and Renown Health. The ADCR/CCRO supports the development of clinical research opportunities for students, residents and faculty and development of institutional infrastructure for clinical research. This role will lead research and innovation to improving health outcomes for Nevada Communities and developing a national reputation for the school of medicine in clinical research. The ADCR/CCRO is responsible for developing and providing an efficient and compliant environment to conduct clinical trials through the UNR Med Clinical Research Center and the Renown Health Office of Clinical Research. This position collaborates closely with the UNR Med Associate Dean for Biomedical Research (ADBR), with all research activities at UNR Med managed collaboratively by these two positions and the Dean.

The ADCR/CCRO will:

  • Lead strategic planning to identify areas for growth in clinical research including clinical trials that align with UNR Med/Renown Health priorities and goals The CCRO shall lead the development of the Affiliation Clinical Research Strategic Plan
  • Through leadership of the research operations and strategy committee
    • Develop a strategic plan that addresses scientific direction and sets near, mid- and long-term research objectives of the affiliation
    • Develop a mission and vision for the integrated clinical research enterprise
  • Oversee all UNR Med clinical research activities and working closely and collaboratively with the Associate Dean for Biomedical Research and laboratory-based scientists on translational research development
  • Engage and support student, resident and faculty in clinical research and scholarship activities
  • Serve as the Medical Director of the UNR Center for Clinical & Translational Research (currently referred to as the Clinical Research Center)
  • Engage current and new sponsors, as well as maintain sponsor relationships to establish the Affiliation Clinical Research Enterprise as a premier clinical trials site
  • Represent UNR Med statewide to both internal and external constituencies in developing, implementing and evaluating the school’s clinical research activities and infrastructure
  • Develop diversity and mentorship programs for research in the clinical departments and programs in collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and the Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion, department chairs, and senior faculty members
  • Serve as a principal investigator (or lead site investigator) for research activities conducted at both the UNR Center for Clinical & Translational Research and Renown Health Office of Clinical Research
  • Work with others throughout the UNR and RH (e.g., ADBR, VPRI, IRB leadership, RH Leadership) to identify and implement improvements in contract, regulatory, and scientific review processes, and protocol submissions to oversight committees
  • Explore opportunities for Clinical research with the Healthy Nevada project part of the Renown Institute for Health Innovation.
  • Oversee the administration of UNR Med and RH pilot grant programs
  • Participate in the recruitment of faculty clinician-researchers
  • Collaborate with other UNR Schools (e.g Schools of Engineering, Nursing and Public Health) on clinical and translational research opportunities
  • Represent the integrated UNR Med and Renown clinical research enterprise with internal and external stakeholders including donors
  • Build collaborative relationships with other NSHE institutions and programs
  • Develop policies that promote acculturation of clinical trials in the health system and systematize subject recruitment strategies, such as opt-in/ opt-out programs.
  • Contribute to work-force development/training initiatives targeting the development of lead site investigators, clinical research coordinators and other clinical research professionals
  • Oversee his or her own investigator-initiated research portfolio with a goal of maintaining/attaining competitive external funding
  • Lead efforts to obtain federal funds to expand infrastructure

Required Qualifications

  • MD or DO; MD/PhD; DO/PhD
  • 5+ years experience in clinical trials and research
  • Experience commensurate with Associate or Full Professor rank
  • 10+ years progressively responsible leadership management in clinical research including experience building successful research program or programs
  • Experience in establishing and managing external partnerships between pharma or contract research orgs and academic health centers
  • Demonstrated success as a research mentor
  • Current grant or award funding
  • Publications that are current, collaborative, and programmatic

Decision making authority

The ADCR/CCRO has the authority for strategic planning for clinical research and organizational development, taking into consideration institutional goals and boundaries of their resources. In conjunction with the Dean's Office, Renown’s Chief Academic Officer and Renown leadership, the ADCR/CCRO defines the goals for clinical research and executes those goals. The ADCR/CCRO defines and makes work assignment in conjunction with available budgets, personnel and sites. The ADCR/CCRO implements UNR Med and Renown policies and procedures throughout their unit and devises internal policies as necessary.

Engaging in clinical research for the health of our community is a key aim of the Affiliation Agreement. Clinical research will make substantial contributions to the school of medicine’s clinical and teaching programs and aligns with opportunity to expand Graduate Medical Education in critical subspecialty areas. The successful development of high-quality clinical research is critical to the Affiliation’s success in achieving its overall clinical and academic excellence in addressing population health and community care needs. Successful leadership in this role directly impacts the University maintaining Carnegie R1 designation and progressing towards membership in the AAU.

Compensation Grade

Academic appointment commensurate with experience plus stipend for duties as the ADCR/CCRO

Total Compensation

The total compensation package includes a competitive salary, moving allowance (if applicable), a rich retirement plan, health insurance options that include dental and vision, life insurance, thirty (30) days of sick leave provided upon start date and two (2) days of sick leave accrued per full month after the first year of service, two (2) days of annual leave accrued each full month, along with many other benefits.
