The Business Design and Optimization Group (BDOG) is Georgetown University’s internal management consulting team that supports the delivery of world-class education and research through business process improvement, professional project management services and financial expertise. The internal consulting model has proven highly effective within the higher education industry at leveraging institutional knowledge through a wide variety of engagements that improve service to students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Job Overview

An Associate in Georgetown’s Business Design and Optimization Group (BDOG) will be responsible for managing all aspects of initiatives sponsored by senior leadership that are intended to increase efficiency, improve university-wide processes and practices, and result in optimal service delivery to Georgetown constituents. An Associate will work independently on consulting projects across the university and will be responsible for supporting project management and delivery, conducting research, and developing recommendations for clients. Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research and analyze data to support consulting projects
  • Developing presentations, reports, and other client deliverables
  • Supporting project planning and management
  • Participating in client meetings and presentations
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues to deliver high-quality consulting services
  • Learning and developing consulting skills and expertise

Associates are mid-level professionals who are either beginning their consulting careers related to BDOG’s service areas or their careers in higher education with consulting experience external to the industry. BDOG Associates’ typical skills include:

  • Analytical Skills: Associates must have strong analytical skills to solve complex problems and provide data-driven insights to clients. They should be able to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies in data, and use this information to make recommendations.
  • Communication Skills: Associates must be able to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues verbally and in writing. They should be able to explain complex concepts in a clear and concise manner and actively listen to understand others' perspectives.
  • Teamwork: Associates must be able to work collaboratively with colleagues on consulting projects and internal team projects. They should be able to contribute to the team's goals, actively participate in meetings and discussions, and build positive relationships with others.
  • Time Management: Associates must be able to manage their time effectively to meet project deadlines and complete deliverables on time. They should be able to prioritize tasks, set goals and objectives, and manage their workload efficiently.
  • Adaptability: Associates must be able to adapt to changing circumstances and work in a fast-paced environment. They should be able to learn quickly, embrace new technologies and methodologies, and be flexible in their approach to problem-solving.
  • Project Team Leadership: Associates must be able to lead project teams with a variety of stakeholders.

Overall, Associates must have a strong foundation of skills and be willing to learn and grow in their higher education consulting careers related to BDOG’s service areas. They should have strong analytical and communication skills, be able to work well in teams, manage their time effectively, and be adaptable to change. Due to the breadth and variety of assignments received by the internal business consulting team, our Associates must be excited by the challenge of learning new areas of higher education, enjoy working independently, be willing to quickly self-educate in order to lead new initiatives and have a passion for education and service.

Work Interactions

BDOG provides analysis and leadership of key initiatives across the university. As a valued internal consulting resource, the group possesses skills and expertise in business process analysis, project management, business planning and financial analysis which are leveraged for a wide-variety of university needs. While providing services across the university, this team is part of the Office of Chief Operating Officer and reports to the Associate Vice President of Financial Strategy and Business Integration.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Management, Engineering, or related field – preference for Master's degree in Business Administration or related field
  • 2 to 5 years of professional experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and the Google Suite

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in consulting, higher education, strategy, or related field
  • Knowledge of data analysis tools (such as SQL or Python)
