Animal Care Program is one of the largest animal research programs in the University of California system, one of the nation's most accomplished research universities, widely acknowledged for its local impact, national influence and global reach. The animal research program exists as a campus-wide institutional resource that supports animal-based research and training while assuring the humane care and treatment of animals. Animals play a critical role in the research and teaching missions of the University.
Serves as the primary manager of a unit or department. Manages clinic or research providing routine, emergency or critical care services or oversees designated services within a large clinic or research enterprise.
Doctorate degree in veterinary medicine. Board-certified in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
Experience directing employees and maintaining a positive, collaborative, collegial, and efficient work environment.
Proven experience supervising a variety of personnel performing animal health care functions including professionals and technicians performing patient care and diagnostic procedures. Includes ability to direct work of others and establish performance standards.
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills with a diverse group of people including clients, clinicians or research staff, referring veterinarians, students, and staff in regards to the veterinary care of animals. Includes ability to communicate with lay personnel with varied ethnic and cultured backgrounds. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with technical staff and management.
Demonstrated knowledge evaluating patients and in performing anesthesia, monitoring and recovery of patients.
Requires demonstrated knowledge associated with conducting examinations, prescribing and administering treatments, and advising owners and handlers.
Requires knowledge of electronic / medical records systems. Must be computer literate.
Skill in performing surgery on laboratory animals.
Skill in performing necropsies on laboratory animals.
Detailed knowledge of husbandry of dogs, cats, primates, rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters, pigeons, gerbils, rabbits, pigs, goats, sheep, frog salamanders, turtles and other reptiles, domestic fowl, fresh-and salt-water fish, marine mammals.
Detailed knowledge of general surgical procedures on the above animals.
Detailed knowledge of pre and post-surgical care of laboratory animals.
PC Skills ( Microsoft applications: Word, Access, Excel, Outlook) and data processing.
Detailed knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act.
Detailed knowledge in the practice of veterinary medicine and especially laboratory animal medicine.
Ability to communicate effectively on a one-to one basis as an aid to the diagnosis of disease problems, and ability to seek out proper veterinary medical treatment.
Skill in diagnosis of disease in laboratory animals.
Skill in therapeutic treatment of various laboratory animals.
Detailed knowledge of the NIH Guidelines as they relate to laboratory animals.
Interpersonal skills sufficient to diplomatically interact to resolve conflicts which occur when laboratory animal policies and procedures are violated.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $92,600 - $232,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $44.35 - $111.21
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
