GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 

The Camner Center for Academic Resources at the University of Miami offers a multitude of resources for every constituent of the University of Miami community: students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators. Our goal is to provide resources to help manage success and advance potential for all students.  The Assistive Technology Specialist is responsible for providing technical guidance and support to students and staff of the Camner Center.  The Camner Center houses the Office of Disability Services, Peer Tutoring Services, and the Learning Specialists support programs.  Additionally, this position will work directly with Student Affairs IT and UMIT to meet the technological needs of the center. 

The specialist oversees the technology used within the center and is the liaison and facilitator for student and staff technology set up, trouble shooting, maintenance, training, and implementation of new technologies.  The specialist provides technology solutions for individual accommodations and accessibility of all materials, including screen readers, voice recognition software, screen magnification software, closed captioning software, and adaptive writing equipment.  A key function of this role is researching, problem solving, and implementing solutions to support students with disabilities and maintain both software and hardware systems supporting our staff and students. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assistive Technology

  • Develops and maintains a resource bank of access technology for various needs of individuals with disabilities in hearing, vision, mobility, learning, and sensory impairments.

  • Supports the technology needs for both remote and in person captioning, ASL, and AI captioning in platforms for Teams, Zoom, etc.

  • Oversees the installation, configuration and maintenance of approved access technology equipment and software within the Camner Center.

  • Interpret, integrate, and synthesize evaluative information to make recommendations for Assistive Technology interventions to provide access for students.

  • Provides administrative support and training for staff in the use of third-party software applications.

  • Develop and deliver training on assistive technologies to students, staff, and faculty.

  • Prepares training materials, conducts presentations, and provides support for students, staff, and faculty related to assistive technology.

Testing Center

  • Oversee the daily operations of the testing center.

  • Set up AT for exams.

  • Management of the testing coordinator position.

Office Responsibilities

  • Maintain exam monitoring camera systems according to the policies and procedures governed by exam proctoring.

  • Maintain reception Kiosk systems and equipment while ensuring kiosk devices are deployed in a compliant manner.

  • Verifies software is functional and escalates issues to Student Affairs Information Systems (SAIS), vendor or UMIT.

  • Acts as first point of contact in the problem determination process, for desktop and network issues.

  • Conducts basic troubleshooting for desktop, laptop computers, AV, and mobile devices.

  • Prepares, installs, tests, and certifies any desktop configuration, including any software drivers.

  • Maintain proper inventory all computers, software licenses, assistive technology, and mobile devices.

  • Applies migration from previous PC and executes PC hardware moves.

  • Decommissions any existing hardware that has been replaced at the Camner Center.

  • Collaborate with Student Affairs Information Systems (SAIS) in acquisitions of any new technology including hardware and software to maintain adhere to the division’s standard.

  • Adheres to Student Affairs Information Systems (SAIS) and University policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate degree or relevant experience in Computer Science or related field

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

•    Four years of relevant experience in supporting assistive technologies

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES (KSA):

  • Proficiency in using and supporting both computer software and hardware options for:

    • Olympus Digital Recorders

    • Echo Smartpen,

    • CCTV (testing and classroom use depending on the student, some students have personal devices)

    • FM Systems

    • Readers (Kurzweill)

    • Dragon Software

    • Jaws

    • Microsoft Office

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
