JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for providing technical expertise and support to facilitate a barrier free environment with equal access to University programs and services. The Assistive Technology/Section 508 Specialist provides consultative support, training, and services to students with disabilities in the use of various assistive technologies and computer application pursuant to Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1).

SALARY INFORMATION:

In compliance with New York’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $55,000 - 60,000. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

REPORTS TO: Associate Director of Student Access Office

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Oversee the production or ordering of alternative media (E-text, enlarged print, Braille, audio files, etc.)
  • Oversee all assistive technology, computers, and technical equipment in the SAO Testing Center.
  • Provide consultation to the campus community regarding the use and accessibility of technology as needed.
  • Promote accessibility awareness and universal design through networking, training, and collaboration with others in the campus community as it relates to assistive technology tools and resources.
  • Consult with the associate director and others across campus on appropriate technology-based accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Manage the maintenance and updating of the Student Access Office website content and department technology.
  • Collaborate with the Accommodations and Services Coordinator in developing training opportunities for support staff in all aspects of assistive technology, adaptive equipment/tools, and student and departmental database platforms.
  • Responsible for building and managing relationships with all vendors who supply products/software to Student Access Office.
  • Oversee all technology contract/licensing execution for vendor products and services; including working directly with contract management in the department of financial operations.
  • Conduct individual and group training to students on the use of computer programs, software, useful apps, and online instructional platforms (eCampus)
  • Provide training to faculty on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and developing adaptive classroom environments and providing course content/materials in accessible alternative formats to meet the needs of diverse student populations.
  • Train support staff on e-text materials, software programs, and assistive technology devices and tools. 
  • Stay informed of new products, devises, assistive technologies, and changes to existing technologies; provide recommendations to the Associate Director. 
  • Coordinate Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) services for students in the classroom.
  • Coordinate ASL interpreters for students in the classroom
  • Oversee and maintain student database platform, Symplicity (Accommodate).
  • Maintain close collaboration with University Information Technology department to ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness of SAO student database platform in congruence with University central database system.
  • Run data reports through student database platform, Symplicity (Accommodate) when needed.
  • Coordinate note-taking assistance accommodation (Glean) and provide training to students in its use
  • Supervise Assistive Technology Graduate Assistant.
  • Assist with assessment, student recruitment, and retention.
  • Develop best practices policies (WCAG 2.0 and AHEAD) relevant to assistive technology and universal design in post-secondary education.
  • Maintain and further develop knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to assistive technology in post-secondary education.
  • Conduct workshops related to the use of assistive technology in post-secondary education as it relates to instructional design and removing barriers to access. 
  • Participate in professional development activities, program development, and serve on committees that impact services for students with disabilities. 
  • Participate in open houses, fairs, and other events on and off campus.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • REQUIREMENTS: (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Interest in and working knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to serving people with disabilities in post-secondary education setting, including ADA/Section 504 and Section 508 and other federal and state laws.
  • Knowledge of database applications.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload according to volume, urgency, etc.
  • Ability to demonstrate comfort working with students with apparent and non-apparent physical, psychological and other disabilities.
  • EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, communications or related field is required.
  • Experience with training in the use and application of assistive technology for individuals with disabilities.
  • Minimum of two years of related work experience is required, including ability to assist Macintosh and Windows users.
