TheUniversity of Montana invites applications for the Assistant Vice Provost for Finance and Personnel. Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President (PEVP) and the Vice President for Operations and Finance (VPOF), this position will oversee fiscal operations and provide strategic advice on personnel matters for the Academic Affairs sector. The Assistant Vice Provost for Finance and Personnel (AVP) stewards the budget and planning process for the colleges and all units reporting to the Provost’s Office.  The individual in this role provides insightful analysis and seasoned advice to support effective decision-making by the colleges, departments and the executive leadership of the University. The AVP has oversight for employee hiring and onboarding; labor relations and benefits; and for the staff under their supervision, training/professional development programs. The AVP will build a network of collaborative relationships and partnerships across the sector, serving as a trusted advisor and resource to deans, directors, faculty and staff.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lead and strategically manage the financial operations of the PEVP sector, including developing and analyzing operating budgets, maintaining and enhancing internal financial controls, and developing sophisticated annual and multi-year financial reporting that supports the strategic decision-making processes in PEVP.
  • Provide leadership and management to the Academic Affairs financial and operational leaders (11 direct reports), as well as dotted finance staff imbedded in the colleges and units.  Ensure adequate staffing, set direction, conduct annual reviews of performance, and provide day-to-day supervision/guidance. Determine the optimal distribution of financial responsibilities and plans effectively for staffing the related needs of the Provost’s Office and the sector.
  • Create short- and long-term financial plans for the University’s academic leadership that support the development and assessment of institutional goals.
  • Ensure that financial reporting effectively supports academic and administrative decision-making.
  • Oversight of funds managed by the provost, ensuring the review and tracking of all financial commitments and balances and distribution of the strategic funding to colleges and other reporting units.
  • Oversight of key financial processes, including that budgets and cash balances of units reporting to the provost are properly supervised and monitored and providing guidance to those units as appropriate.
  • Provide guidance to colleges and academic support units on financial matters.
  • Consult with and advise sector management on a wide range of HR-related issues, providing performance management guidance to department management in a variety of areas, including coaching, counseling, disciplinary actions, etc.
  • Serve as the liaison for the Provost’s Office with Human Resource Services, participating and adding to strategic decisions and opportunities of the University.
  • Coordinate with Human Resource Services to ensure the Academic Affairs/Campus Life sector implements and models good practices especially in the areas of performance management, engagement, compensation administration and talent acquisition.
  •  Assume responsibility for special projects, as needed.

Position Details

  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Salary for this position is $ 125,000-$130,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and ten (10) years of progressively responsible related finance and administrative experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Expert quantitative analysis skills, with the ability to forecast and present data clearly.
  • Ability to think critically and approach fiscal matters thoroughly and comprehensively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively on an ongoing basis with University leaders, administrators, faculty, staff and students.
