Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Global Affairs, reporting to the Senior International Officer/Vice President for Global Affairs (VP). S/he should be capable to represent Rutgers Global internally and Rutgers externally, in partnership with the VP. The university seeks candidates who are visionary, entrepreneurial, and collaborative leaders with demonstrated success and proven effectiveness in developing and facilitating international programs and initiatives. The AVP has responsibility for providing leadership and coordination for Rutgers faculty, students and staff in international research, educational, and outreach activities and programs.   The position also requires an understanding of comprehensive internationalization concepts, and a high level of creativity as Rutgers continues to expand its international engagement globally. The AVP will represent the Vice President when s/he is away or in specified initiatives. 
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  •  The AVP will oversee at least five Rutgers Global units, including (i) Programs, (ii) Partnerships, (iii) the China Office, (iv) International Training Programs, and (v) Global Initiatives. The ability to function in an executive capacity and show initiative is essential. The AVP’s purview will span all four parts of the University system (RU-Camden, RU-New Brunswick, RU-Newark, and RBHS). The AVP will also work with the Rutgers Global unit leadership in helping establish and administer program budgets. 
  • The AVP will work closely with the Vice President and senior staff in strategic planning, policy development and implementation, the development of new programs and strategic partnerships, and identifying new funding and external resources for Rutgers international operations. Other duties include working with Chancellors, Deans and faculty committees, helping coordinating academic support for international students, improving international student integration and exchanges with domestic students to transform the student experience in keeping with university values and mission. Additionally, the AVP will engage with alumni and fundraising activities, help oversee programs and partnerships assessment, maintaining active and effective connections with partner schools, international agencies such as the UN, foreign government offices, corporations and NGOs, and coordinating data collection, analyses and reports.
  • The AVP will work closely with the VP to conceptualize and bring to life new programs which may include: (i) one or two major programs abroad (with 200 plus students each); (ii) gateway/hub offices in several countries; and/or (iii) a “Global Learning for All” program. The AVP will play a key role in the development of mission-aligned equity and access-focused partnerships and initiatives which demonstrate a commitment to solving global problems and to confronting both domestic and global issues of injustice.
  • The AVP will serve as a liaison to diverse units across the University including the schools and centers, the Rutgers University Foundation, University Equity and Inclusion, the Enrollment Management offices, the Graduate Schools, the Offices of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, the Offices of Student Affairs, and others. International travel will be required as the pandemic subsides.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Advanced degree
  • A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in administration, with specialized expertise in international affairs in (or related to) higher education.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of international education, administrative principles and practices relevant to program design and development of international programs and services, budget management, and staff supervision. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in international education and with federal regulations supporting international student and scholar success. 
  • Must have excellent communication and diplomatic skills, strong written skills, ability to work independently, and strong organizational skills. 
  • Multi-tasking is essential. 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, preferably in an academic environment, and the ability to translate broadly defined goals into strategies and purposeful activities. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency with common computer software for word processing, spreadsheet preparation, visual presentation and e-communications required.  
Preferred Qualifications
  • A PhD with 10+ years of experience in global education/internationalization, some at the Director level or higher. 
  • Demonstrated creativity and entrepreneurial experience, and be supportive of Rutgers goals in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. 
  • Prior experience in international education and a management role in directing students and/or faculty programs strongly preferred. 
  • Prior leadership position with university-wide influence preferred.  
  • Proficiency in a language (in addition to English) preferred.  Good knowledge of Global Affairs.

  • Position will require domestic and international travel – therefore the ability to travel internationally is required.
