Job Overview

Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Digital Officer (CDO), provides leadership, vision, and direction for the Enterprise Data, Analytics, and Reporting team in Digital Technology Solutions (DTS). Drives the creation of an Enterprise Data Vision, Strategy, Architecture, and Governance model for the University of Cincinnati (UC) working with key stakeholders across campus. Independently anticipates technological challenges and opportunities by developing, implementing, and assessing a comprehensive strategic plan; builds consensus and develops collegial, collaborative working relationships with a broad range of constituencies. Leads change and transformation initiatives in enabling data-driven decision making to support digital transformation.


Essential Functions
  • Serve on the Vice President’s leadership team, participating in decisions affecting the unit under direct supervision as well as the whole organization unit. Counsel the VP/CDO on the University’s technological challenges and opportunities in the data domain. Serve on various department, division, and university committees. Represent DTS at appropriate university bodies, committees, councils, etc., as requested. Plan, direct, provide leadership and execute special projects as assigned.
  • Drive the creation of an Enterprise Data Vision, Strategy, Architecture, and Governance model for the University of Cincinnati (UC) working with key stakeholders across campus. Independently anticipate technological challenges and opportunities by developing, implementing, and assessing a comprehensive strategic plan. Build consensus and develop collegial, collaborative working relationships with a broad range of constituencies.
  • Lead change and transformation initiatives in enabling data-driven decision making to support digital transformation.
  • Drive the creation of an Enterprise Data Vision, Strategy, and Architecture (working with stakeholders across the institution) to drive Digital Transformation.
  • Provide strategic leadership for data lifecycle management and governance across the institution.
  • Increase data literacy and awareness while creating a data-driven culture across the institution.
  • Deliver high-quality analytics and reporting solutions across key core enterprise systems.
  • Work collaboratively with development leaders and other university constituents to uncover additional opportunities to apply data science and modeling techniques to solve business problems and empower leadership to make data-driven decisions.
  • Keep an eye on the future and move the institution towards predictive analytics and similar innovation.
  • Work towards standardization of technology solutions used in the data, analytics, and reporting space.

Essential Functions Continued
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, standards, policies, and controls.
  • Work collaboratively with Information Security on critical initiatives to secure institutional data.
  • Create a customer service-oriented culture within the organization.
  • Under minimal supervision, make decisions based upon priorities, schedules, and an understanding of business initiatives.
  • Provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Required Education

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Analytics, or related field.


Required Experience
  • Seven (7) or more years of experience in data analysis or data science delivering high quality and robust solutions.
  • Seven (7) or more years of management experience.
  • Experience designing and building enterprise data architecture (warehouses, marts etc.).
  • Experience implementing data governance programs.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (like Tableau, PowerBI, SAS).

Additional Qualifications Considered
  • 15 years of proven, data leadership in an engineering-centric, product development, or delivery organization. This includes experience as a successful Data and Technology leader who understands and leads the application of data for driving real business value. This should also include a proven track record of exceptional technical project management, prioritization, and communication.
  • Strong ability to tell a story through data, think critically, and question assumptions.
  • Ability to drive and lead change.
  • Sound knowledge of data architecture principles and related infrastructure requirements covering on-premise and cloud platforms.
  • Broad knowledge of information technology processing systems, concepts, and methodologies to include cloud.
  • Hands on experience with data design concepts in Data warehousing, MDM, data quality, business reporting, and dashboards.
  • Excellent ability to interpret or correlate an extensive variety of information and decompose complex analytical and technical problems and translate them into simple business solutions to be presented to key stakeholders.
  • Highly service-oriented; reliable, responsible, self-motivated, and enthusiastic.
  • Strong business and financial acumen. Solid understanding of how businesses operate to ensure job holder can carry on conversations with all functions of the enterprise.
  • Understanding of, and skill in developing executable strategic plans.
  • Demonstrated skill and success in managing an organization including budgeting, hiring, developing, and positioning resources in support of the function.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills. Ability to successfully engage with a diverse set of stakeholders across the institution, including students, faculty, staff, vendors, and partners.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and diagnostic skills.
  • Able to develop collaborative, productive working relationships across university groups.
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for operating in an agile DevOps oriented organization and culture.
  • Experience in the higher education setting.
