Position Summary

The intersection of alumni engagement and career development has been at the forefront of the University of Denver’s strategy for several years. Reporting directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Global Networks, the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Career and Professional Development will deepen and expand our career development paradigm which draws together students, faculty, staff, employers, and alumni in order to ensure our students leave the DU campus prepared to be successful, agile and adept professionals. With the benefit of the new Burwell Center for Career Achievement, this leader will continue with the strong momentum and support from the entire campus community. This leader will oversee and advance efforts in student and alumni career development, employer connections, faculty partnerships and student employment all with a strong eye toward diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Assistant Vice Chancellor will collaborate  extensively with other leaders in DU Advancement and across the University to create and execute a forward-thinking strategic direction for career and professional development. The University of Denver is committed to fostering the holistic development of our students as outlined in the university’s Strategic Plan, DU IMPACT 2025, and Chancellor Haefner’s 4-Dimensional Student strategic imperative.  This position will serve a critical role in co-creating and implementing the Professional Dimension of the 4 Dimensional Student Experience. The Assistant Vice Chancellor will also represent DU’s career model externally at national conferences and to faculty and alumni to enhance DU’s national brand in career programming.

Essential Functions

Student and Alumni Career Development

  • Lead a team of skilled and experienced professionals toward engaging 90% of the University of Denver’s diverse undergraduate and graduate student population with vital career resources and programs.
  • Create innovative and forward-thinking strategy to continually deepen relevant, meaningful and accessible student engagement in career development that is integrated into the campus culture and relevant to students of diverse backgrounds and identities.
  • Engage students, faculty, staff, employers, and alumni with diverse backgrounds, experiences and passions in meaningful programming and significant partnerships to advance the impact of career development services.
  • Ensure a scalable strategic direction for supporting early, mid and late alumni in their career development and professional development aspirations.
  • Oversee strategy for scaling innovative mentoring opportunities for students to enhance engagement between students and alumni.
  • Deepen relationships with college deans and faculty to ensure strong integration into the undergraduate and graduate curriculum.

Employer Connections & Student Employment

  • Ensure a strategic employer outreach plan for the organization that aligns with the University of Denver academic programs, student interests, and market demands.
  • Identify partnerships with campus leaders, trustees, faculty, alumni and families to grow strategic employment pathways for undergraduate, graduate students and alumni with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Partner with employer relations and external relations staff across campus to ensure coordinated employer outreach efforts.
  • Oversee the three-year pilot of enhanced student employment program on campus framed with a social justice lens; ensure successful outcomes toward increased student competency development and supervisor success.

Career Services Operations

  • Lead team in setting clear goals and metrics related to their unique areas of contribution that rollup into institutional strategic imperatives and Advancement Division strategic framework.
  • Oversee clear tracking mechanisms for assessing student and alumni engagement in career development, employer engagement, student employment activity, faculty outreach, and other key organizational metrics.
  • Manage and oversite of marketing efforts of programming and career development resources including website, blog platform, collateral, social media, and the partnership with Advancement’s marketing team to help increase engagement efforts with students and alumni.
  • Ensure strong data collection processes for first-destination outcomes at all graduation cycles; create and deliver comprehensive reports for campus leaders and college deans to support accreditation and program review.
  • Partner with Information Technology on the selection and oversite of career development and experiential learning software platforms for the University.
  • Analyze engagement and first-destination survey data leveraging demographic information to inform strategic planning work to ensure clients of all identities and backgrounds are supported and achieving success.
  • Manage strategic operations and usage of the newly opened Burwell Center for Career Achievement to create a hub of engagement activity for students, alumni and employers.
  • Support the day-to-day functionality of the team; facilitate the recruitment, hiring, training, mentoring, evaluation, and professional development of a diverse team of professionals (20 staff members plus, 17 graduate and undergraduate student employees).
  • Manage the career and professional development operating budget, including monitoring transactions and assisting in budget modeling and forecasting processes.
  • Embrace a culture of flexibility and work life balance for a hardworking and dedicated team.

Campus Partnerships

  • Convene, lead and collaborate extensively with the executive directors overseeing career development services for student populations in the Daniels College of Business, Josef Korbel School of International Studies, Sturm College of Law and Graduate School of Social Work to ensure strong communication and alignment toward university goals.
  • Collaborate with partners to ensure student engagement for online and traditional programs.
  • Partner with academic and administrative leaders across campus to enhance, communicate, and deliver dynamic career services that support holistic student success for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Lead and collaborate on initiatives to deeply integrate alumni and employers with the mission and strategies of the career development team.

Leadership

  • As a member of the Senior Vice Chancellor’s leadership cabinet, provide strategy, guidance, and direction in support of the mission, vision, values, and goals of DU Advancement and the University of Denver.
  • Partner closely with campus leadership including the Chancellor, Provost and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs to implement 4 Dimensional Student Experience with specific support and focus on the Professional Dimension.
  • Lead the implementation of the Career & Professional Development Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategic Plan to ensure that staff that are well equipped to provide constituents with diverse backgrounds and identities inclusive and equitable experience.
  • Serve as an expert and advisor to University administrators, members of the Board of Trustees, deans and other leaders and colleagues across campus on strategies for advancing the University of Denver’s career development services.

  • Ability to represent the University of Denver, and its major initiatives and units, in a variety of capacities.
  • Proven ability to work with a high level of independence, professionalism, maintain confidentiality, prioritize assignments, and manage time effectively.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to foster and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, donors, volunteers, and University Officials.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups having competing interests and priorities within the University and community.
  • Proven experience integrating diversity, equity and inclusion into career development practices and employer relations work.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education or work experience (Veterans with equivalent combination of military certification/education and experience may substitute for the degree qualification).
  • 7 years of experience in career counseling, talent management, change management, employee training/coaching, or human resources.
  • 5 years of experience managing personnel, with a demonstrated commitment to coaching, mentoring, and developing team members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree.
  • Experience as the lead staff member over career and professional development services in a complex and dynamic higher education setting.
  • Experience engaging faculty, staff, alumni, families, and employers in career programming.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Some nights and weekends as required

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is 16.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $145,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
