School/Unit Description: The Stanford University Libraries serves as a world-class research library, supporting teaching, learning and scholarship at Stanford and beyond. Our collections and services comprise all formats of information: from books and articles to archives and special collections. Research data is an increasingly important part of the University’s activities. Nearly every discipline, center and department at Stanford incorporates data into their academic activities; data is at the core of new initiatives such as Stanford Data Science, the School of Sustainability and Shared Research Platforms. Recognizing the need to support data across its full lifecycle—from acquisition and discovery to preservation and sharing—the Stanford Libraries have organized a new division, Research Data Services (RDS) . Reporting directly to the University Librarian, this unit will transform and elevate data services from the Libraries to the entire Stanford academic community.  Position Summary: The Assistant University Librarian(AUL) for Research Data Services will lead the formulation of this ground-breaking unit. With 16 staff members drawn from experts across the Libraries, your work will focus on synthesizing the current library data services into a coherent whole. You will partner with other leaders in the Library Executive Group to develop and deliver on strategies for new data services from SUL. You will work hand-in-hand with other research data stakeholders across the University—especially in the Office of the Dean of Research, Stanford Research Computing Center, and Stanford’s seven schools—in developing a Stanford-wide ecosystem for rich data services. In this role, you will:

  • Direct and lead the Libraries’ Research Data Services division.
  • Establish the strategic direction of the division in consultation with the University Librarian and other members of the leadership team.
  • Work directly with faculty and other researchers to develop a comprehensive understanding of research data needs at Stanford
  • Encourage, develop and deliver patron-facing services and support for data across all disciplines;
  • Direct the development, promotion, and delivery of campus outreach, consulting, training, and workshops for data-related services;
  • Partner with other library units and data matrix staff within SUL to ensure holistic and integrated approach to data and data services and serve as executive sponsor for Data Workflows Task Force;
  • Partner with other campus units in promoting awareness and use of Libraries for data services;
  • Collaborate with other campus units on identifying and creating cross-Stanford approaches to data services;
  • Lead key initiatives to develop or enhance data services, such as a campus-wide data catalog;
  • Participate in Stanford-wide, national, and international forums on data efforts, best practices, and standards;
  • Participate as a member of the library senior management team.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Successful leadership experience managing and providing research services in a large complex environment, preferably in academia.
  • Advanced degree in a discipline that requires direct engagement and participation in computational research or data analysis, including demonstrated expertise in computational research tools (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, ArcGIS, QGIS, among others).
  • Proven background in support of academic data research through providing services, managing content, or creating data ecosystems.
  • Expertise in developing data projects and initiatives at scale, including detailed understanding of the requirements for making data sets suitable for local use.
  • Track record in project development from inception to launch and continuous development.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and motivate staff and to build cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrably excellent communications skills, (listening, verbal, written, and presentation);
  • Ability to collaborate with and manage diverse stakeholders across a major research organization on strategic priorities;
  • Experience with libraries or other service organizations is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated successful experience developing and maintaining complex budgets.
