Position Summary
The Assistant University Archivist (AUA) for Research Services and Student Engagement oversees reference, instruction, and student engagement with Duke University’s history and Archives. They work closely with administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the general public to answer inquiries, both in person and remotely. The AUA connects with student organizations on campus, promoting the use of University Archives and collecting their records. Reporting to the University Archivist and acting in her stead when necessary, the Assistant University Archivist also coordinates University Archives events, web content, social media, and other communications, in conjunction with University Archives staff and other colleagues.

Responsibilities
  • RESEARCH SERVICES (45%) Conducts reference interviews and assists researchers in person and remotely; provides onsite reference services at the Rubenstein Library research services desk, including evening and weekend rotations. Delegates Archives-related reference work to other staff as appropriate, providing training as needed. Interprets and applies University policies concerning access to official records as determined administrative policy or legal statute in consultation with University Archivist or individually if Archivist is not available. Liaises between the University Archives and the Rubenstein’s Research Services department, providing information and updates about Research Services activities and about University Archives collections, finding aids, and activities.
  • STUDENT OUTREACH (25%) Collects records of undergraduate and graduate student groups on the Duke University campus through outreach to these groups. Seeks records of student populations that have been traditionally marginalized at Duke to ensure a more complete history of the university. Works with Digital Records Archivist to appraise these mostly born digital collections, and to ensure collection of online content.
  • INSTRUCTION (20%) Creates and provides archival instruction, primarily for Duke University undergraduates. Considers issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion when preparing class sessions. Routinely presents and gives tours to student groups, and occasionally does so for other audiences as requested by the University Archivist.
  • OUTREACH (5%) Provides public relations support for the University Archives. Prepares content for and maintains Archives website and social media sites and manages University Archives contributions to the Rubenstein Library’s blog. Prepares occasional exhibits on University history. Develops and provides logistical support and publicity for University Archives public events.
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (5%) Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through continuing development of professional knowledge and abilities, membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • May hire and supervise student assistants. May train and supervise graduate interns in providing reference and instruction service.
Qualifications

Education:
Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program and/or advanced degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience.


Experience: 
Required: One or more years of relevant archives experience; familiarity with standard archival and library procedures; demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues and library users; excellent planning skills, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; ability to work effectively in a team environment; commitment to collecting and sharing diverse histories; demonstrated proficiency using computer-based technology and ability to adapt to new technologies.
Preferred: Prior experience working in an academic library; experience with or interest in institutional histories; familiarity with anti-racist approaches to archival work; experience with library instruction and public programming; familiarity with software frequently used in libraries as well as platforms used for digital access; familiarity with library instruction and pedagogical approaches for active learning; experience in collection development.


Working Conditions

Salary and Benefits
Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; the anticipated range is $55,000-$65,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 14 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
