Job Duties
The primary purpose of this position is the grounds maintenance of East Carolina University’s Athletic Complex, which includes 17 acres of athletic fields, trees, shrubs, and natural landscape at the Olympic Sports Complex.
Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
-Supervise the maintenance of soccer and softball fields of play and surrounding grounds
-Perform duties with precision and attention to detail as fields of play must meet ECU, NCAA, and conference requirements for field measurements, lining and upkeep in order to provide accurate and safe venues for student-athletes.
-Coordinate with stadium/athletic fields’ maintenance and facility management for major sports events, grounds maintenance and crew supervision
-Formulate and implement proper turf grass maintenance schedules and management practices
-Recognize, identify and treat turf grass insects and diseases that could damage the quality of turf
-Demonstrate knowledge and experience with fertilizers and chemical spread formulas used in turf maintenance.
-Determine materials needed in areas of responsibility
-Operation of all turf equipment such as sprayers, aerifiers, mowers, etc.
-Demonstrate technical knowledge and understanding of a variety of specialized machinery, including boom sprayer, fairway reel mower, and utility tractor
-Perform strenuous manual labor in all weather conditions
-Schedule equipment maintenance
-Assist Director of Athletic Grounds with special projects and game day operations for all outdoor sports;
-Assist in the planning and scheduling of work and training for student workers; assist in new hire process
-Build quality relationships and work collaboratively and professionally with Pirate Club, athletics, and University staff, students, business vendors and all donors and stakeholders.
-Abide by all written policies and procedures of ECU, the Department of Athletics, The Educational Foundation (Pirate Club), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and all applicable conferences or associations.
-Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletic Grounds
-A pesticide license is preferred at time of hire; if not licensed, the selected candidate must be able to obtain a license within six months of employment.
-Nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours are required in the performance of duties.
Position will work some weekend, overtime, or evening hours for additional compensation.
Minimum Education/Experience
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Prefer degree in turf grass management, horticulture or related field. Prefer three to five years’ experience with turf grass management in a medium to large scale athletic operation and/or experience with horticultural management on a medium to large scale organization. Candidates should have experience operating grounds-related equipment such as riding lawn mowers, backhoes, forklifts, skid steers, etc.
License or Certification required by the Department
