Job Description

Job Summary:

The Assistant Transportation Researcher, under general supervision, conducts transportation and pavement materials (asphalt binder and asphalt mixtures) related research using literature review, statistical analyses, and independent investigations. Assists with proposal preparation, data collection through lab binder, aggregates, and mixture testing and field visits, data analysis, and report preparation.

Essential Duties:

  • Conducts research studies, including basic and advanced asphalt binder, aggregates, and mixture testing, and statistical-based data analyses, literature reviews, and other related activities.

  • Assembles, organizes, synthesizes documents, and archives data sets, and data models.

  • Prepares written reports and other correspondence.

  • Interacts with sponsors and potential clients.

  • Develops and delivers presentations.

  • Assist with preparing proposals.

  • Other duties may be assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in civil engineering.

  • No prior experience required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of asphalt binder Superpave performance grading system, binder and mixture rheology/chemistry, asphalt mixture cracking and rutting tests (e.g. IDEAL-CT and Hamburg wheel tracking test), RAP, polymer modification, balanced mix design.

  • Ability to perform lab binder, aggregates, and mixture testing, multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of research experience in asphalt binder and mixture testing.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move very heavy materials.

  • Ability to perform common office functions.

  • Ability to frequently communicate with other individuals within the workplace.

  • Ability to constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
