The department, through a varied and extensive program of courses, presents students with past and present attempts to think critically and reflectively about fundamental questions of knowledge and value in order that they will be led to examine their own views. The study of philosophical problems in the spirit of free inquiry requires the student to develop and exercise the powers of precise discrimination, creative imagination, logical organization and evaluative judgment.
Position Summary
The Department of Philosophy at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a two-year, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor that will begin August 10, 2024. This appointment has a service component commensurate with rank. This appointment may be renewable contingent upon department needs, availability of funds, and performance review.
We seek an individual with at least teaching competence (i.e., an AOC) in value theory (broadly conceived, but political philosophy and applied ethics preferred), metaphysics, and informal logic (critical thinking). We are especially interested in individuals who have demonstrated an ability to teach introductory courses in these areas in a general education curriculum. The successful applicant will be expected to be an effective teacher, and the position will have a [3-3] teaching load.
Required Qualifications
A PhD degree at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2024) is required, as is teaching competence (AOC) in the areas listed above, and a specialization (AOS) in at least one of these areas.
Preferred Qualifications
Teaching experience and effectiveness in the listed areas is preferred. For the value theory AOC, experience and effectiveness in teaching political philosophy and applied ethics is preferred.
