The College of Visual & Performing Arts (CVPA) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applicants for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor in Art Education to begin September 1, 2024. We seek a highly organized educator with the appropriate Doctoral Degree, who has experience and expertise in K-12 art education, licensure and accreditation, and a research trajectory at the intersections of applied pedagogical and studio practice. 

As the creative arts center within a research university, CVPA invites a colleague able to creatively implement the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) approved program while situating art education at the forefront of contemporary art practice. Our Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art Education and Master of Art Education Post-baccalaureate (MAE Post-bac) initial licensure programs include direct engagement with schools and the community. Through these partnerships, we incorporate emergent media arts and public practices that are redefining visual competencies, expanding possibilities for PK-12 visual arts educators. A strong background in working across disciplines (i.e., integrating art across content) and the ability to apply studio and theoretical practice in clinical settings is highly desired. The successful candidate will work closely with the MAE Graduate Director and serve as faculty sponsor for the NAEA Student Chapter Club.

Minimum Qualifications: Terminal degree (Ed.D., or Ph.D. in Art Education or closely related field) at the time of appointment. Three years of K-12 teaching experience. Collegiate experience as a teacher of record.

Preferred Qualifications: Successful teaching of courses required for initial licensure in art education; Ability to assume the role of program supervisor for pre-service visual arts teacher licensure; Knowledge of Massachusetts Visual Arts Frameworks (2019) and the DESE Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP) system; Knowledge of media arts and experience teaching secondary media arts education.

Responsibilities include four classes in the Fall and Spring semesters, field placement coordination for courses requiring Field-based Experience (FBE) observations, advisement of Art Education (AED) majors, and state-required record keeping and reporting. Please refer to the program requirements on the University website for a detailed list of courses.
