Position description
The Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Specialist in the Berkeley Agroecology Lab, in the area of Soils and Agroecosystems.
The Berkeley Agroecology Lab, housed in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy & Management (ESPM) at the University of California, Berkeley is looking for a highly motivated Assistant Specialist to conduct research under the supervision of Prof. Tim Bowles, and in collaboration with Dr. Yvonne Socolar.
We seek an Assistant Specialist to provide technical support for a field research project at the intersection of soil carbon and water in California agricultural systems. Research questions include, but are not limited to, (1) whether there are tensions between soil carbon sequestration and irrigation water conservation, and (2) what management practices can best support soil carbon and water retention in low-water environments. The project will be on farms and research sites across California and will require frequent travel to sites up to 3 hours away.
The Assistant Specialist will join the interdisciplinary Berkeley Agroecology Lab, a community with a strong emphasis on fostering an inclusive environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds can thrive. The successful candidate will be part of a larger team of collaborators, including the Lawrence Livermore National Lab, as well as growers and other agricultural stakeholders. In addition to research, this position will offer opportunities for frequent interactions with such stakeholders, engagement in participatory research, professional development, and project management.
Responsibilities:

  • conduct research at the intersection of systems approaches to agricultural water conservation (e.g. dry farming) and systems approaches to carbon sequestration
  • conduct research on soil hydraulic properties, such as soil water retention curves
  • process and analyze samples from field sampling in the laboratory
  • conduct quality control analysis on sampling data
  • organize field sampling campaigns
  • develop and maintain project databases
  • assist in preparing grant reports
  • assist in organizing and facilitating project team meetings
  • provide oversight of undergraduate research interns
  • maintain lab supplies and organize use of lab equipment
  • support academic publications
