Description

 

The Assistant Scientist at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine Center for Neurovirology and Gene Editing, under the supervision of Dr. Arthur Feldman, performs complex research activities following established methods and procedures in support of the research projects of the PI. The Assistant Scientist assists with various experiments; testing standard research methodologies, procedures, and verbal and written instructions that will include vector cloning, cell culture studies, biochemical assays, and PCR based assays.

Responsibilities include: Primarily performs echocardiography and on transgenic mice that carry a human genotype, requiring strong attention to detail. Sterile technique as it relates to cell and tissue culture as well as bacterial culture growth; biochemical and molecular biology assays including western blots, qPCR, plasmid DNA, cell lines, tissue handling of samples of blood and sera from both animals and patients in sterile conditions and consistent with level two status of the laboratory.  The Assistant Scientist retrieve samples from patients at the time of heart transplant or blood draws as needed so must be comfortable in a hospital setting. The Assistant Scientist also maintains and cleans sophisticated laboratory instruments and equipment, inventories chemicals, supplies, and equipment, and instructs and assists students in particular  during the summer. Performs other duties as assigned. 

Required Education and Experience: 
Bachelor's degree in science-related area of research and at least two years of post graduate experience in biochemistry, molecular biology or an associate discipline of science. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:
*Ability to perform cell culture related experiments
*Knowledge regarding the scientific basis for in methods of DNA handling
*An understanding of the scientific underpinning of PCR techniques
*Proficiency in MS Office Suite, (or Apple equivalence) Adobe and related software including
*Exposure to the theory of the above techniques in a formalized didactic certificate or degree granting program
*Possess the ability to build and maintain professional relationships.
