Position Overview

Research Collaboration, a unit within the Center for Research on Learning, University of Kansas is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented full-time Assistant Researcher to support a growing team of professionals who contribute to research projects focused on implementing and evaluating professional development for teachers. The Assistant Researcher will conduct components of the evaluation of Kansas Department of Education (KSDE) Technical Assistance System Network (TASN) Evaluation. He/she will conduct on-site and virtual observations and evaluations of TASN trainings and meet with TASN trainers to develop and implement comprehensive evaluation plans. He/she will work directly with the Principal Investigators to ensure that the theoretical underpinnings that form the basis for the professional development are implemented with fidelity and collaborate with the Principal Investigators to determine the effectiveness of the trainings, fidelity of implementation, and the projects’ impact on students, including students with disabilities. He/she will become the primary point of contact for a number of TASN projects, supporting them in the ongoing implementation of comprehensive evaluation plans, data collection and analysis, and evaluation reporting.

This position requires a driver’s license and ability to travel, including overnights.


Job Description

  • (25%) Collaborate with TASN professional development providers and with the rest of the evaluation team to develop and implement project-specific and overarching TASN evaluation plans.
  • (25%) Observe and evaluate the use of adult learning principles and evidence-based professional development components at TASN trainings and coaching events (face-to-face and online); provide constructive feedback and coach trainers to improve their professional development.
  • (25%) Support TASN providers to implement comprehensive evaluation plans including collaborating with the Principal Investigator to design and program evaluation instruments, distribute surveys to respondents, send follow-up reminders, tabulate and analyze data, and revise surveys based on quantitative and qualitative data.
  • (25%) Analyze and report data associated with the evaluation results using text and graphical representations that are easily understood by a range of audiences, thus supporting TASN professional development providers to make data-based improvements.

Position Requirements

  • This position requires a driver’s license and ability to travel, including overnights.

  • Required Qualifications

    1. High school diploma and four years of research or evaluation experience or a bachelor’s degree.
    2. Two years’ experience working independently to complete multiple tasks within specified timelines with thorough attention to detail as evidenced in application materials.
    3. Data analysis experience including determining themes from qualitative data, as evidenced by a writing sample (e.g., publication, report) and application materials.
    4. Excellent interpersonal communication skills as evidenced by interview and references.
    5. Excellent written communication skills, specifically interpreting data for non-academic audiences, as evidenced by a writing sample (e.g., publication, report) and application materials.
    6. Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment as evidenced in application materials.


    Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in evaluation or research sectors.
  • Master’s degree or post-bachelorette certificate in education, research, or a related field.
  • Expertise in utilization-focused evaluation methods, as evidenced in the interview.
  • Experience evaluating educational initiatives, as evidenced in application materials and interview.
  • Knowledge of KSDE and TASN professional development initiatives, as evidenced in application materials and interview.
