The Assistant Research Scientist conducts research and teaches courses related to pandemics and infectious diseases at both the scientific and policy level with the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs. The person chosen for the position will apply for and manage federal and foundation grants in pandemic preparedness and public health policy with regard to infectious disease. Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate PhD

  • Relevant professional experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Education:

  • PhD in public health, epidemiology, pandemic preparedness or related field

Responsibilities:

  • Research Duty - Conducts research related to pandemics and infectious disease at both the scientific and policy level with the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs (SIIA). Publishes in academic journals as well as popular media outlets. Produces research intensive policy papers of 5000-6000 words on designated research topics chosen and approved by the SIIA Director. Meet with students to discuss subjects related to the research project and paper. Acknowledge the Bush School in all publications, related to the research policy papers, worked on or published while at the Bush School. Research and disseminate information for the purpose of establishing a pandemic research database. Assist in the planning, coordination and execution of symposia and conferences related to the research activities of the SIIA held annually in Washington, D.C. and College Station, TX. Supervises students and staff on SIIA research projects.

  • Teaching Duty - Teaches two courses for the Bush School of Government and Public Services; “Infectious Diseases in the Developing World: Risks, Challenges, and Solutions” and co-teaches “Bioterrorism” with Dr. Gerald Parker. Or other courses on pandemics as mutually agreed to with the Scowcroft Director and Dr. Parker, director of the Scowcroft Institute Biosecurity and Pandemic Preparedness Program. Performs other duties as assigned.
