The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources has a wide variety of strengths in forestry and natural resources management, policy and economics, environmental science and technology, wildlife and conservation biology, tree improvement, silviculture, forest biotechnology, and international forestry. The Department has over 90 full time faculty and staff, and more than 750 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. Essential Job Duties
The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources invites applications for a 12-month, professional track Assistant Research Professor.
The primary responsibility is performing and reporting national assessments of forest ecosystem health. To accomplish this, the incumbent will serve as a technical coordinator, editor, and have collaborative decision-making responsibility on technical and research aspects in the production of national forest health assessments.
The incumbent will 
  • Prepare research proposals, work plans 
  • Conduct research in a.) quantitative forest ecology b.)quantitative/qualitative indicators of forest health c.) applied statistics
  • Extending existing theory, 
  • Developing and applying appropriate analytical techniques, 
  • Testing hypotheses, 
  • Reporting results in a suitable venue, 
  • Implementing new findings in national assessments.
Other Responsibilities
Secondary responsibilities of the incumbent include technology transfer, graduate student advising, and teaching a professional or technical course to be agreed upon with the Department Head.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. degree in forestry, natural resources, forest ecology, forest heath or a related discipline.
  • Experience relevant to forest health or forest science.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks successfully
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience in team-oriented research groups, both as a team leader and a team member
  • Demonstrated ability to publish research in scientific journals
  • Proficiency in spatial analyses and experience with GIS software
  • Ability to apply various kinds of analyses to a variety of natural resources problems such as insect and disease distribution, fire, and land use.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency or ability to gain proficiency in spatial analysis in ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Pro.
  • The ability to work with a variety of forest health indicators including indicator development and working toward a goal of integrating indicators at multiple temporal and spatial scales.
  • Experience in writing proposals for external funding, managing budgets, and communicating effectively with both university and funding agency administrative personnel.
