Job Title Assistant Program Director: Evaluation and Student Formation
Job Description
The Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study (NDIAS) is a university-wide research institute based in Notre Dame Research. The NDIAS promotes issue-engaged, inclusive, and interdisciplinary study of questions that engage complex ethical challenges of our time and affect our ability to lead valuable, meaningful lives. Each year, the NDIAS convenes a diverse group of faculty fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate scholars to participate in a residential research and teaching community, with topics organized by an annual theme. NDIAS also hosts artists and practitioners-in-residence, and serves as a campus convener to advance Notre Dame’s mission, particularly related to ethics-related research and scholarship through interdisciplinary efforts.
Recently, NDIAS was awarded a 3-year, $2.97 million grant from the John Templeton Foundation (JTF) to support the Institute in enhancing and expanding our current Teaching Fellowship program. The grant will provide support to 15 faculty members, both from Notre Dame and from outside institutions, as they build pedagogically innovative, large-scale courses that advance understanding of human flourishing.
The Assistant Program Director: Evaluation and Student Formation (APD: E/F) will work with faculty and NDIAS colleagues to develop, implement, and then report on a comprehensive assessment of how these courses impact students and their campuses. By working with colleagues at partner universities; the APD: E/F will manage a large-scale program of evaluation on the impact of these courses; in the lives of students, the culture of the institution, and related to public engagement. A primary focus of the APD: E/F will be to evaluate how the topics and experiences students engage in their course influence their practical-decision making and deepen their understanding of the role of virtue and flourishing in their personal, vocational, and spiritual lives. The APD: E/F will look at ways these courses spread on their campuses and the ways in which campuses can best invest in signature courses on flourishing. Evaluative tools and processes envisioned in the grant proposal will include a mixed-method approach, both quantitative and qualitative, including surveys, focus groups, interviews, case studies, and site visits to the fellows’ universities.
Reporting to the Associate Director- Signature Course Fellowship, Education and Formation, the APD: E/F will also make a significant contribution to the overall strategic programming for Education and Formation through NDIAS at Notre Dame and beyond. This position will develop and execute programming that engages both undergraduate and faculty constituents. Additionally, this position is responsible to develop and execute plans for evaluating the engagement, education, and impact of NDIAS strategies related to education and formation; whether at Notre Dame or with outside institutions.
Additional responsibilities include supporting the Associate Director and Faculty Director with research and writing related to human flourishing, ethics-based courses, and the grant. The APD: E/F assumes primary responsibility for disseminating program information to create public awareness and support, contributes to the development of and assists in the management of the program’s website, and monitors all changes and additions to the editorial content. This position will assist with other duties related to the grant as assigned.
This position is funded for the life of the grant with strong possibility of long-term renewal beginning August 2026.
