Vice Chair, Quality and Safety, Department of Anesthesiology

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Department of Anesthesiology is currently seeking a Vice Chair of Quality and Safety to provide mentorship and career guidance to our faculty.  As a part of our leadership team, you will be responsible for implementing the strategic objectives of Froedtert Hospital (FH) and the Medical College of Wisconsin with respect to quality and safety. In addition, this leader will collaborate with the Anesthesiology Program Directors to assure residency, fellowship, medical student, and Master of Science Anesthesiology (Anesthesiologist Assistant) student learning objectives and training requirements are incorporated into normal operations.

Position Summary

The Vice Chair for Quality and Safety is the physician leader responsible for driving the Department of Anesthesiology’s clinical quality and safety programs.  They will lead the selection of departmental quality priorities, the organization of departmental quality roles and relationships, and the standardization of quality efforts across all clinical divisions within the Department.  The Vice Chair will develop and implement departmental strategic and operational initiatives for quality and safety surveillance and improvement.  They will partner with colleagues from across Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin (F&MCW) on perioperative and procedural quality initiatives that involve anesthesia.  The Vice Chair will be an experienced and respected anesthesiologist with a proven record of success as an effective leader, communicator, collaborator, and team builder in an academic medical center.

Responsibilities

  • Member of Department of Anesthesiology’s Executive Committee.
  • Chairs/oversees the Department of Anesthesiology Quality Committee(s) and the is the key point of contact for Enterprise Quality relating to Anesthesia practice.
  • Leads Directors of Quality for the Department of Anesthesiology’s Community Hospitals and Ambulatory Surgery Centers.
  • Partners with administrative and surgical colleagues to lead improvement in perioperative care.
  • Develops a short and long-term strategy to increase the impact of quality work across the Department of Anesthesiology in all of its sites in the Enterprise.
  • Works with anesthesiology faculty to redesign process improvement and systems to improve care.
  • Contributes to the science of quality improvement.
  • Builds teams and collaborative relationships within the F&MCW enterprise with procedural and surgical departments and with other surgical Vice Chairs of Quality.
  • Harnesses the power of EHR, informatics and MPOG to measure success and outcomes.
  • Designs means of educating faculty, residents, students and APPs in quality improvement processes and assesses the impact of the educational systems.
  • Participates in Department Peer Review and facilitates the provision of meaningful feedback to clinicians.
  • Supports departmental and division clinical performance improvement and quality processes.
  • Notifies the Chair and collaborators of trends, incidences, and indicators of concern.
  • Works with the Residency Program Director to facilitate curriculum to meet resident ACGME quality and safety milestones and program requirements.
  • Develops a system to keep track of and monitor the progress in all quality efforts in the Department of Anesthesiology and shares the results of these projects with the department.
  • Collaborates with Surgical and Procedural Quality and Safety Committees within the Enterprise.  Champions the peer support initiative for the department of anesthesiology.
  • Develops and tracks annual quality and safety goals in partnership with the Chair.
  • Oversees process improvement projects to support organizational certification and accreditation by Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and The Joint Commission (TJC), among other governing bodies.
  • Oversees Departmental databases related to QI efforts.

Medical College Physicians (MCP), Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin’s adult specialty care group, is an integral component of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s partnership with Froedtert Health and essential to Froedtert & MCW’s successes and achievements in adult clinical care. Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Community Physicians is a primary care and multispecialty group with more than 300 physicians and nearly 170 advanced practice providers, delivering care in 35 health centers and clinics in southeastern Wisconsin. In fiscal 2019, combined patient visits to these locations totaled more than 900,000.

Froedtert Hospital:

Froedtert Hospital is the primary adult hospital affiliate of MCW and is staffed by MCP physicians providing care in all medical specialties and subspecialties.
