The Vice Chair is responsible for assisting the Chair in the educational, research, and clinical missions for the Department. The Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Medicine reports to the Chair of the Department of Medicine. The Vice Chair of Education is responsible for oversight of the educational mission of the department, including coordination of training residents, fellows, and medical students. Qualifications The GSM seeks a clinician‐educator with strong leadership and organization skills, with previous senior level management experience in an academic healthcare organization. The applicant must have a record of accomplishment at a national or international level in their field of expertise and a strong interest in pursuing research and scholarly activity. Candidates must also commit to diversity and equal opportunity. This position is a tenured or non‐tenure track academic appointment with dedicated time for pursuing academic and scholarly activity. The candidate must be board certified by the American Board or American Osteopathic Board in Internal Medicine or a sub‐specialty board and eligible to obtain a license to practice medicine in Tennessee. Academic rank will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and qualifications. In addition to thriving Internal Medicine Residency and Transitional Year programs there are well established fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology and Pulmonary Disease/Critical Care Medicine and Hematology/Oncology. Plans are underway for expansion into additional areas. The GSM is home to ten academic departments with more than 400 full‐time and volunteer teaching physicians, dentists, and researchers. Currently, 224 residents and fellows train in 15 ACGME‐accredited specialty and subspecialty programs, and 16 residents train in CODA‐accredited general dentistry and AAMOS accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery programs. Third‐year medical students from the UTHSC perform core clerkships with GSM faculty in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pediatrics, neurology, and psychiatry. Fourth‐year electives are offered in a number of specialties and subspecialties and are available to medical students across the country. The GSM, in partnership with the UTMC, sponsors extensive translational research in both clinical and laboratory settings. The faculty collaborates with various institutions both regionally and nationally including other UTHSC campuses, UTK, ORNL, and other health science center institutions. The UTMC is the East Tennessee region’s only academic medical center, magnet recognized hospital, and level I trauma center. Its mission of serving the region through healing, education, and discovery is made possible through the partnership of UHS and the GSM. For over 60 years, UTMC has been a leader in improving the health and wellness of the region and serves as a referral center for Eastern Tennessee, Southeastern Kentucky, Western North Carolina, and Northern Georgia. Its 625‐bed hospital is home to East Tennessee’s only dedicated heart hospital, adult transplant center, and regional perinatal center. The Joint Commission recognizes the UTMC as a comprehensive stroke center, comprehensive cardiac care center, and has given the medical center its advanced certification for total hip and total knee replacement. The nine Centers of Excellence at UTMC provide the highest quality of specialized services to patients.
