The Department of Public Health Sciences is committed to excellence in research and teaching, to building a faculty and staff committed to preparing a diverse workforce, and to extending educational opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds. Our mission is to advance health equity and well-being in an urbanizing world. The Department has extensive ties with local and regional health departments, health care systems, and other community partners. In addition to our CEPH-accredited BSPH, MPH, and PhD programs in Public Health Sciences and Epidemiology, we offer a BS in Health Systems Management, a CAHME- accredited MHA program, and we collaborate with the School of Data Science in the delivery of a MS in Health Informatics and Analytics.
UNC Charlotte is North Carolina’s urban research university, the second largest and fastest growing of 17 institutions in the UNC system. The Department is housed in the College of Health and Human Services, which also includes the Department of Applied Physiology, Health, and Clinical Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Social Work.

Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Professor will engage in scholarship that advances the Department’s portfolio of public health research; teach in our undergraduate, masters and doctoral program(s) and contribute professional service to the institution, community, and discipline. Assistant Professor candidates are expected to present evidence of promise for contributing to the Department’s research portfolio, obtaining external research funding, and teaching.
Eligible candidates must have a doctoral degree in public health in one of the following disciplines: community health, health promotion and education, maternal and child health, physical activity and/or nutrition, or a closely related area by August 2024. Applicants must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences.
Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
Preferred candidates will have an MPH. The extent to which the candidate can contribute to the mission and vision (https://publichealth.charlotte.edu/about-us ) of the Department will be considered. Candidates from all areas of community health will be considered. Applicants with research agendas in the areas of: cancer and other chronic diseases; maternal and child health; sexually transmitted infections; suicide, violence and injury prevention; and physical activity and nutrition are encouraged to apply. Preferred candidates will have teaching experience related to behavioral theories, health promotion interventions and/or program planning and evaluation and/or can demonstrate effective teaching of students from socially and historically marginalized populations .
