Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences at the University of North Carolina Charlotte is seeking to fill a cluster hire faculty position in the field of Social or Environmental Justice. We invite applications from scholars who have a strong commitment to addressing pressing issues related to social or environmental justice and who can contribute to our college’s strategic focus on socio-economic mobility, migration and diaspora, climate change resilience and impact, and health disparities.
Requirements for this position are a Ph. D. in one of the disciplines represented by the college’s departments or a related field in hand by the time of appointment, a record of and potential for scholarly publications and an active research agenda including success at and potential for externally funded research as appropriate for the applicant’s research field. Candidate’s research should focus on socio-economic mobility, migration and diaspora, climate resilience and impact, or health disparities and show potential for interdisciplinary collaborations in that area of focus. Candidates should have experience teaching at the college level in a multicultural environment. Desired qualifications include experience collaborating with the community partners and/or in data science applications.
Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
Candidates must possess the following qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field, in hand by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated expertise and a strong record of research and publication in the fields of social or environmental justice, with preference for candidates specializing in socio-economic mobility, migration and diaspora, climate change resilience and impact, or health disparities.
  • Strong methodological expertise in one or more of the following areas: community engaged research, participatory action research, applied humanities, related disciplinary methodologies, and/or data science.
  • Commitment to engaging with multicultural communities and addressing real-world social and environmental justice challenges.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including the ability to mentor UNC Charlotte’s students from different backgrounds and experiences. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage students of different ages, races, ethnicities, backgrounds, identities, and abilities, helping to remove barriers in order to ensure the success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university.
  • A proven track record or the potential to secure external research funding if the field is appropriate.
