Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of the Department of Economics is to provide excellent education, research, and service in the field in a public university setting of undergraduate and graduate students who reflect the socioeconomic, racial, religious, and other diverse characteristics across our state, as well as across our nation and around the world. This goal breaks down into four important components: 1) to teach economics to undergraduates in a manner that will introduce them vigorously to its broad scope; 2) to offer scientific and professional training to graduate students to prepare them for teaching and research careers in the fields of microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and applied microeconomics (labor, health, education, and development) and industrial organization; 3) to carry out cutting-edge research in these areas to be published in professional journals; 4) to provide consulting and administrative support services to the department and the economics profession as well as to the university, local community, state, and nation.
Position Summary
The Economics Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications in any area of economics for a tenure-track position at the assistant-professor level, with appointment beginning July 1, 2024. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity for high-quality research and teaching. Duties will include research, undergraduate/graduate teaching, mentoring, and service. We will consider applicants completing their graduate degree as well as those with experience in academic and other research settings. To be hired in at the Assistant Professor position, a completed Ph.D. in Economics or a related field is required by 1 July 2024. An initial appointment of Instructor is applied to a successful candidate who expects to complete the Ph.D. by 1 July 2025.
