Position Information

The Division of Pediatric Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine has a full- time (1.0 FTE) faculty position available at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This position will service the inpatient and outpatient medical care services, and resident training for Pediatric Surgery at Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO), Denver Health, St. Joseph’s Medical Center, as well as other local campuses and Colorado Springs. The role also includes oversight of the Children’s Hospital Colorado Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Center, in coordination with the Medical Director, as Surgical Director of Adolescent Bariatric Surgery. The position is expected to perform 75% clinical FTE as a Pediatric Surgeon and 25% as a Bariatric Surgeon.

The candidate will be expected to provide independent clinical services, supervise advance practice providers (APPs) in the provision of independent clinical services for patients, as well as teach and supervise residents and fellows. These duties will include inpatient and outpatient clinical services, as well as inpatient and outpatient surgeries at CHCO and its affiliated practice locations. The candidate will be expected to sustain the CHCO bariatric surgery 05-2022 2 program as one of the largest pediatric programs in the country, from both a research and clinical perspective.

The candidate will be expected to provide independent clinical services primarily for the Pediatric Surgical Service at Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO). Duties will include primarily coordination of care of the following inpatient teams and outpatient clinics: Pediatric Surgery and Bariatric Surgery, as well as oversight of the Adolescent Bariatric Surgery program. T

The Assistant/Associate Professor will participate in the Division of Pediatric Surgery’s Network of Care, which includes coverage responsibilities at our North Campus, South Campus, Denver Health, St. Joseph’s, and Colorado Springs. The position will be primarily based at the Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO)’s Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities

• Maintain an effective working relationship with the Surgeon-in-Chief, department chairs, medical staff and hospital administration

• Close coordination with the Medical Director of Adolescent Bariatric Surgery for strategic planning with a goal of ongoing growth of this program

• Coordination with the bariatric surgery research team to support high quality research and maintain the national reputation in pediatric bariatric surgery research

• Participate in Continuing Medical Education activities to assure continued delivery of quality pediatric burn care

• Foster positive working relationships with liaisons from other services

• Provide operative care for a broad spectrum of pediatric surgical conditions, including all facets of general pediatric surgery, trauma and acute care surgery, with a focus on pediatric/adolescent bariatric surgery

• Working with bariatric team and patient/family with risk/benefit discussion, determination of additional procedures such as warranted such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy, upper endoscopy, and/or liver biopsy.

• Creation of individualized surgery plan and medical work-up prior to bariatric surgery

• Attending weekly clinic and team meetings

• Call coverage shared within group

• Contribute to clinical research and training of Pediatric Surgery residents and fellows

• Perform other duties as assigned

The Bariatric Surgery Team takes a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. The team has multiple subspecialty providers including an Endocrinologist, Nutrition trained MD, Pediatric Psychologist, Registered Dietitian, Pediatric Surgery Advanced Practice Provider, Pulmonoloist, Hepatologist, Gastroenterologist, Gynecologist as well as nursing and social work support. The team integrates subspecialty providers into clinic for collaborative and comprehensive care. The Bariatric team is also heavily involved in outreach working with Children’s Hospital Physicians Relations program to travel to Primary Care and Subspecialty offices near and far to educate referring providers on what the Bariatric Surgery team has to offer patients suffering from severe obesity.

The Assistant/Associate Professor reports to the Division Chief.

Supervision Exercised

The Assistant/Associate Professor will provide direct clinical instruction to Advanced Practice Professionals, fellows, residents, and nurses. The Assistant/Associate Professor will educate

and hold clinic providers accountable for adherence to CHCO practice, operational, and behavioral standards.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at:

Assistant Professor: $375,000-$425,000

Associate Professor: $425,000-$475,000

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Ability to gain and maintain membership in good standing of the medical staff of the hospital

Assistant Professor

  • Medical Degree from an accredited School of Medicine
  • Eligibility for Board Certification in Pediatric Surgery
  • Demonstrated experience/training in bariatric surgical techniques
  • Demonstrated proficiency in pediatric surgical clinical, education and research efforts
  • Ability to obtain license to practice as a physician in the state of Colorado with prescriptive privileges

Associate Professor

  • Board Certification in Pediatric Surgery
  • 5+ years’ experience in bariatric surgical techniques
  • 5+ years’ proficiency in pediatric surgical clinical, education and research efforts
  • Ability to obtain license to practice as a physician in the state of Colorado with prescriptive privileges
