Summary of Job Duties:

This UAMS Department of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Assistant Professor, non-surgical hourly physician specializes in the non-operative treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. The Sports Medicine Hourly Physician can maximize non-operative treatment, guide appropriate referrals to physical and occupational therapies, and if necessary, expedite referral to an orthopedic/sports surgeon. They will treat patients for acute injuries (such as ankle sprains, muscle strains, knee & shoulder injuries, and fractures), overuse injuries (such as rotator cuff and other forms of tendonitis, stress fractures) and medical and injection therapies for osteoarthritis. The PCSM will treat patients to help them improve performance, enhance overall health, prevent injury and maintain their physical activity throughout their lives.

Qualifications:

  • Valid state medical license as MD or DO
  • Has obtained one year of additional fellowship training in Sports Medicine.
  • Current BC/BE in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics or Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation orthopaedic surgery (American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery)

Responsibilities:

  • Comprehensive health care for the active patient, including diagnosis and treatment of sports or activity -related and unrelated injuries and illnesses. Use of manual techniques to prevent and treat muscular and skeletal conditions common in athletes. Special knowledge of the principles of athletic conditioning. Focus on injury prevention and rehabilitation, including injuries common to specific sports.
  • Sports Medicine Physicians have received additional training in the non-musculoskeletal aspects of sports medicine treating patients for concussions (mild traumatic brain injury) and other head injuries; athletes with chronic or acute illness (such as infectious mononucleosis, asthma or diabetes); nutrition, supplements, ergogenic aids, and performance issues; exercise prescription for patients who want to increase their fitness; injury prevention; “return to play” decisions in the sick or injured athlete; recommendations on safe strength training and conditioning exercises; healthy lifestyle promotion.
  • Provides outpatient consultation and hospital consultation services.
  • Maintains CME units based on the requirements of the specifying Board.
  • Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events and writing summaries.
  • Enhances department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
  • Other duties as assigned.
