The Department of Biological Sciences at Prairie View A&M University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting in fall 2022. The ideal candidate will have expertise in teaching introductory biology courses to biology majors, including core concepts in molecular and cellular biology, genetics and evolution, plant and animal physiology, ecology, and population biology. Preference for candidates with experience in teaching Histology or Anatomy & Physiology to upper-level students. Minimum qualifications for the position are a completed Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or a related field, prior to appointment, and a demonstration of teaching interest and experience. Applicants must demonstrate scholarly excellence in their specialties and the ability to acquire external funding.
Responsibilities:
Teach Histology or Anatomy & Physiology and other related biological courses to major students.
Commitment to the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, and service.
Advise students on the degree plan requirements for pre-professional programs.
Mentor and supervise students through academic advising, scientific organizations, research and internship opportunities, and departmental activities.
Serve on college-wide committees; participate in departmental activities, such as ongoing assessment projects, search committees, and regular department meetings.
Ability to fulfill assessment requirements according to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS ) accreditation standards.
Create and maintain partnerships with two-year schools and four-year transfer institutions; adapt and align PVAMU programs to promote transfer and grow enrollment in PVAMU Biology programs.
Develop community partnerships to inform workforce and career pathways for PVAMU-Biology students.
Identify and pursue external funding opportunities.
Conduct and publish research in the area of specialty.
Develop an undergraduate research program.
Establish and maintain a competitive research program.
Maintain competency in the discipline and teaching practices through professional development activities.
Maintain regular office hours.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience:
Ph.D. in Biology or related biological fields.
Minimum of three-years full-time college teaching experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Evidence of peer-reviewed publications.
Demonstrated ability to teach at least one of the following: Histology or Anatomy & Physiology.
Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology in teaching and learning.
Demonstrated innovation in student-centered instruction through Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences.
Demonstrated experience with science teaching pedagogy, curriculum and/or program development.
Excellent writing and communication skills as demonstrated through conference participation, workshop instruction, successful grant proposals, and/or publications.
Demonstrated effectiveness working in a collaborative, team setting.
Dedication to increasing access, inclusion and diversity in STEM education.
Preferred Qualifications:
Post-doctoral research experience.
Three or more years of undergraduate teaching experience.
Three or more years of experience in academic or career advising.
Two or more years of experience in creating budgets and writing/managing grants.
A proven record or propensity to obtain external funding to support an active research program.
Record of scholarship and publication in higher tier journals appropriate to the applicants' field of study.
