Position Description:
The Department of Engineering Fundamentals at the University of Louisville invites applications for a position as Teaching-Track (Term) Faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor or Instructor. The successful candidate will have two primary responsibilities:
1) Teach Engineering Methods, Tools and Practice I and II. This two-semester sequence of courses introduces first-year engineering students to the practice of engineering and introduces the methods, tools, and skills necessary for success in engineering.
2) Leading the J.B. Speed School of Engineering's participation in growing the state wide T2E (Transition to Engineering ) program. Transition to Engineering (T2E) is a recently initiated program with the goal of increasing the number of baccalaureate engineering students in Kentucky. To achieve this goal the program provides: a) ongoing support and training for engineering teachers in program affiliated high schools, b) interaction between Kentucky high school students and engineering faculty at Kentucky universities, and c) allows high school students in the program to earn engineering credit at Kentucky Universities. Duties include: visiting T2E classrooms in the fall and spring to provide relevant interaction between engineering faculty and T2E students, high school teacher training and support, ongoing T2E curriculum development to assure alignment with first year engineering curriculum at UofL, and conducting educational research to support, inform, and improve implementation of the T2E program.
Department Information
Established in 2007, the Engineering Fundamentals Department is comprised of faculty who teach common core courses taken by all entering engineering students. In their first four semesters, engineering students take 18 hours of courses from the Department of Engineering Fundamentals, including Engineering Methods, Tools, and Practice I and II and calculus-based Engineering Analysis courses. Most courses have many sections and multiple instructors who collaborate to work as instructional teams to maintain consistency of learning outcomes across courses and support continuous improvement.
The department's focus on undergraduate teaching is highlighted in The Center for Teaching and Learning Engineering (CTLE). The CTLE is housed in the department and promotes outstanding STEM teaching and learning through scholarship, research, and professional development. The CTLE's research group GEARS, the Guild for Engineering Education, Achievement, Retention and Success, includes faculty and graduate students in the School of Engineering, the Department of Psychology and Brain Sciences and the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville.
Required Qualifications
- Masters or Doctorate in a STEM field, Education, or Learning Science.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills, including working with a diverse population.
- Some relevant experience and interest interacting with high-school and first-year college students.

- Ability to perform statistical analysis using statistical software (SAS, SPSS, or R)
