Position Description

The Hite Institute of Art & Design, the Department of Fine Arts of the University of Louisville, seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Graphic Design starting in the 2022-23 academic year.

Position summary/ Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include teaching a 2/3 load, from undergraduate through graduate levels, in your areas of expertise; managing ongoing curriculum and program development; and working with the Designer-in-Residence to ensure a strong relationship with community graphic design professionals. In addition to teaching, responsibilities include maintaining a dynamic research and creative activity program. Evidence of success in professional research and creative activity might include design work cited through peer-reviewed processes, national awards, and/or exhibitions in the field. Service obligations include serving on Departmental committees, advising students, curriculum development, outreach to the community and profession and other areas consistent with the University of Louisville's policies.

This position is subject to budget approval.

Required Qualifications

MDes, MFA, or PhD in Graphic Design, Visual Communication design, Interaction Design, or other areas related to the concerns of graphic design study (degree completed by July 1, 2022); strengths in visual systems, typography, and graphic design history.

Preferred qualifications

Two or more years of professional practice with a documented record of accomplishment in graphic design/visual communication; college-level teaching experience is desired (may include graduate teaching assistantships). Also desired is understanding of graphic design theory and semiotics, and UX/UI abilities.

The Hite Institute is the Art Department within the University of Louisville. The Hite is a comprehensive art and design program, comprising fine art studio and design areas, art history, and curatorial studies, and offering BA, BFA, MA, and MFA degrees. The Hite Institute is housed within the College of Arts and sciences. The Graphic Design Program is one of four BFA tracks, along with 2D, 3D, and Interior Design.
