ATTENTION:

The Department of Art and Design at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of Sculpture beginning in August 2024.This is a full-time position with teaching responsibilities for undergraduate courses within the Department of Art and Design. The instructional assignment includes 3D-Design (Foundations), all levels of Sculpture (I, II, III, IV/V), and a general education lecture course, World of the Arts (WOTA). The Sculpture lab/studio was recently upgraded with a multi-million-dollar renovation.  We seek candidates from a variety of perspectives who will take an active interest in progressing the Sculpture program through the integration of digital processes and technology, such as 3D printing and laser cutting/etching, as well as traditional practices.

JOB DETAILS:

Official job-related duties are separated into three categories: Teaching, Research, and Service.  A successful candidate must teach full-time (3:3 teaching load).  Semester course rotation will vary based on department and program needs, with possible teaching assignments in Three-Dimensional Design, all levels of undergraduate Sculpture, and a WOTA course. Faculty members are expected to serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage and support students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities.  For Research, the candidate will be expected to pursue an active creative research agenda that engages undergraduate students, results in publications or exhibitions, and contributes to advancing the department, university, and the profession. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace the principles of inclusion and belonging as a university community member.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will hold an MFA or other terminal degree in Sculpture or Studio Art with a focus in Sculpture.  ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2024; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2025 in advance of their first scheduled review.
  • Candidates should have experience operating and managing a Sculpture studio/classroom, including a metal fabrication area, digital design lab, foundry, and a general work area.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous university-level teaching experience in all levels of Sculpture and a sustained record of professional research activity.

  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training drills. 
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage and support students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities.
  • The candidate will be expected to pursue an active creative research agenda that engages undergraduate students, results in publications or exhibitions, and contributes to advancing the department, university, and the profession. Lastly, for Service, the candidate will be expected to participate in activities that support the function of the department, college, university, and community relevant to the one’s expertise and interests. 
  • This position also includes the management of student workers/studio assistants.
  • The position's regular operations include maintenance and operation of specialized equipment and tools, including a non-ferrous induction foundry furnace, a gas melt-out kiln, MIG, TIG, stick, and oxy-acetylene welders, 3-D printers, and a Wazer water jet cutter; budgeting and ordering supplies; overseeing materials and inventory; and maintaining a high standard for safety, cleanliness, and organization in these spaces. 

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

The NASAD accredited Department of Art and Design offers programs in studio/visual art, art history, graphic design, and media arts, serves approximately 300 majors and minors, and offers B.A., B.S., B.S.E., and B.F.A. degrees. The Department of Art and Design is a part of the College of Arts and Communication and employs 20+ full and part-time faculty and staff. The department is located in the Greenhill Center of the Arts, which houses the Theatre/Dance and Music Departments, the Crossman Gallery (a 2,500-square-foot facility presenting professional, juried, and student exhibitions), and a new gallery at the University Community Engagement Center.

The Sculpture Area at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, is nationally recognized as an iron-casting educational facility. UWW students have been a strong presence at the National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art and Practices. With a new state-of-the-art non-ferrous induction casting facility, we have also attracted the attention of the American Foundry Society.  With the addition of a digital lab, we encourage students to learn both traditional and contemporary sculpture practices. The Sculpture area houses a large metal fabrication space, a separate grinding room, an induction foundry space, a dedicated ceramic shell room, a plaster room and sand mold-making space, a chemical patina room/spray booth, a digital lab, a large work area for students including ventilated work benches for wax working, etc., and an outdoor courtyard workspace.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting 9-month, academic year salary of $52,000.
