Job Description
Idaho State University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is seeking applications for a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Structural Engineering, beginning in Fall 2024. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing and teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in Structural Engineering, with a specific focus on concrete structures/materials, along with other core civil engineering curriculum courses.
The candidate is expected to establish a collaborative, externally funded research program and contribute to professional service. ISU’s civil engineering department boasts several exceptional facilities, including the Engineering Research Complex (ERC) and the Disaster Response Complex (DRC). The successful candidate will collaborate with fellow researchers and leverage these available facilities to advance their research. Additionally, they will play a key role in mentoring graduate students and engaging in synergistic activities with fellow engineering faculty at the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES). CAES is a research, education, and innovation consortium comprising the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and the public research universities of Idaho, including Boise State University, Idaho State University, and the University of Idaho. CAES is equipped with unique facilities in its Idaho Falls location such as the Advanced Materials and Characterization (MaCS) and the Applied Visualization Laboratories. Collaboration opportunities also abound at the Collaborative Computing Center (C3) in Idaho Falls, an innovative hub for high-performance computing, as well as the ISU Research Data Center (RDC) in Pocatello.
The close proximity of Idaho State University’s Pocatello campus to the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory and CAES Building (just a 45-minute drive away) offers exciting opportunities for research and educational collaboration across various fields, including energy and energy infrastructure. Furthermore, Idaho State University has a campus in Idaho Falls, conveniently located adjacent to INL and CAES.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated ability to teach and conduct research in Structural Engineering, including but not limited to concrete/civil materials.
- Evidence of scholarly accomplishments, such as publications in top-tier journals and presentations at reputable conferences.
- Strong potential to attract external funding for research from public and private entities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Expertise in Structural Engineering with the ability to compete in obtaining external funding in the broadly defined field of computational analysis and other emerging fields such as machine-learning and artificial intelligence. Additional training or experience in one or more areas of Materials Science, Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, and Transportation Engineering would be advantageous. Experience with experimental research is a valuable benefit.
