Summary of Duties:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Washington State University invites applications for a permanent, full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Pullman, WA, with a specialty in Statistics. We seek applicants who have an established or emerging research record in methodology and theory for statistical machine learning or modern statistical computation. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Statistics, develop independent and collaborative research, establish an externally funded research program, and publish scholarly work. The candidate will also ideally develop interdisciplinary research collaborations with allied research groups in sciences, engineering, and other areas. Expected start date of employment is August 16, 2023. 

Job duties: 

• Maintenance of a strong record of publication and scholarly activity.

• Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Statistics.

• Establishment and leadership of a grant-supported research program in methodology and theory for statistical machine learning or modern statistical computation and, where applicable, development of interdisciplinary research collaborations with allied research groups in sciences, engineering, and other areas.

• Advising graduate students at both the masters and doctoral levels.

• Service contributions to the department, college, university, community, and profession.

Required Qualifications:

• Earned Ph. D. in Statistics, Mathematics with a Statistics emphasis, Data Science, or a closely related field is required before the start of the position

• Demonstrated record of or potential for research in statistical learning and/or machine learning methodology/theory or modern statistical computation

• Proven or potential for successful teaching and instruction 

• Demonstrated commitment to campus diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts

Preferred Qualifications:

• Research expertise that is in areas of statistics that complement and enhance the existing strengths with the current group of statisticians, probabilists, and applied mathematicians in the department

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Washington State University is one of only two Statistics Ph.D. granting departments in Washington State.  Currently the Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers the following Statistics-related degrees:

• BS in Mathematics with a Statistics Emphasis

• BS in Data Analytics (with a strong Math/Stat component of 8 required classes)

• MS in Statistics

• PhD in Mathematics with a Statistics emphasis

• PhD in Statistical Sciences (with interdisciplinary data analytics focus)

Salary Range - Revised: $80,000-$93,500

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
