Position Description

San Francisco State University, Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences beginning August 7, 2024. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests include issues of equity as they pertain to speech, language, communication, hearing, cognitive, and swallowing disabilities. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment -- through their research, teaching, and service -- to fostering equity, diversity, and criticality in our academic department. We are seeking applicants with experience in and demonstrated commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. This faculty search is part of a university-wide cohort hire focused on Black and Latinx/e student success.  We are looking for teacher/scholars who have an established commitment to teaching, research and/or service in and with the Black and Latinx/e community.  Candidates for this position are expected to satisfy two or more of the eight Black and Latinx/e Student Success Cohort Hire criteria:

The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at San Francisco State University was first established in 1948 as the Speech and Hearing program in the Department of Special Education, one of the first academic units of its kind in California. We became a department in 2018 and were renamed the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS). Faculty in the SLHS department draw on interdisciplinary approaches informed by SLHS, education, cognitive neuroscience, cortical plasticity in hearing, conversation/discourse analysis, gender-affirming care, and disability studies and critical race theory. We are guided by principles of equity, inclusion, collaboration with communities, and systemic change for social justice. We emphasize the integration of theory, research, and practice, and we value interdisciplinary perspectives. San Francisco State University is one of the most diverse academic institutions in the country. Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in issues of equity as they pertain to speech, language, communication, hearing, cognitive, and swallowing disabilities, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, developing an active ongoing scholarly program in one’s area of specialty, developing curricular innovations that address issues of SLHS practice, and ongoing committee and service assignments. The SLHS department regards scholarship and practice as mutually informing and of equal value. Most of our faculty members are also practitioners. Applicants who hold or are able to obtain a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) and/or a California license in speech-language pathology preferred.

Required qualifications:

• Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, or related disciplines. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
• Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students.

Compensation:  

The anticipated Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is:  

$87,500 to $89,500 annually (12 monthly payments per academic year). 

The anticipated hiring range is $7,292 to $7,458 per month.

Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work ( https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm ) .

Professional development funds, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
