Summary

 
Bowling Green State University (BGSU) invites applications for a Sound Archives Librarian with faculty rank of Assistant Professor. This position reports to the Chair of the Department of Special Collections (SC) within the University Libraries (UL) and is a full-time, twelve-month, tenure-track appointment. The SC Department is seeking a collaborative and detail-oriented individual to serve as Sound Archives Librarian in the Music Library and Bill Schurk Sound Archives (MLBSSA). This position processes and describes archival collections in a variety of formats, assesses and migrates legacy formats, catalogs sound recordings and other archival materials, and provides outreach and instructional services.
Information about Program and College
The Music Library and Bill Schurk Sound Archives (MLBSSA) is part of the Special Collections Department within the University Libraries. With more than one million items, the MLBSSA is the largest collection of popular music in an academic library in North America. Recordings include 45s, 33s, 78s, CDs, reel-to-reel tapes, cassette tapes and other formats. The sound recording collection is supported by books, scores, video, periodicals, fanzines, promotional materials and archival collections. The MLBSSA also provides materials in support of BGSU’s College of Musical Arts.

Essential Functions

• Assesses audio and visual media for preservation and digitization; creates digital surrogates of media as appropriate; recommends equipment purchases to facilitate digitization.
• Processes archival collections and creates finding aids in ArchivesSpace; creates and maintains documentation for processing materials.
• Provides original and copy cataloging for popular music materials, including, but not limited to recordings, audiovisual materials, sheet music, periodicals, fanzines, and special collections; creates NACO and SACO records for the MLBSSA; maintains catalog records in library systems.
• Teaches or co-teaches instruction sessions related to sound archives collections; may teach credit-bearing courses as assigned.
• Provides MLBSSA reference services; stays abreast of new MLBSSA resources, print and electronic.
• Works with donors as assigned.
• Maintains up-to-date professional knowledge and skills in areas related to music librarianship and archives management.
• Develops and maintains a record of scholarship through presentation and publication.
• Participates in departmental, library and university governance and service commitments.


Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution to be conferred by position start date.
• Six months or more of experience processing and describing archival collections using national standards
• One or more years of experience preserving and digitizing audio formats using nationally recognized best practices or coursework on the preservation and digitization of audio formats.

• Degree in music.
• Knowledge of popular music.

• Experience with development, assessment, and preservation of collections.

• Evidence of service at the local, state, or national levels.
