Scope of Job
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s diverse student body as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of the School of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year. We invite applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Environmental and Natural Resources Economics with emphasis on applied economics, finance and/or policy in agriculture, fisheries, natural resources, biotechnology, environment, international development, trade, and non-market valuation, beginning Fall 2022 subject to funding availability. Given UTRGV’s strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico along the US-Mexico border, this hiring initiative seeks candidates who can bring a multidisciplinary perspective to strengthen and complement SEEMS’ established expertise in ocean, coastal, earth, agriculture, environmental, and sustainability sciences. The selected finalist will establish an independent research program that successfully attracts extramural funding, actively contribute to program growth, departmental development, and engage in innovative teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

School/College Background
The COS has state-of-the-art facilities for research and instruction available for SEEMS faculty on the brand-new buildings on UTRGV’s main campuses in Edinburg and Brownsville, and at the Coastal Studies Labs in Port Isabel. The selected candidate will join a dynamic and highly interdisciplinary research group of faculty with diverse backgrounds and expertise that enable rich interdisciplinary collaborations. Faculty in SEEMS work closely with local area partners including federal (e.g., NOAA, USFWS, USDA) and state agencies (e.g., Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Department of Agriculture) on collaborative opportunities for research and teaching. We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as an Assistant Professor in a full-time capacity in the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences and the successful candidate will develop a research and teaching program focused on sustainable agriculture and food systems, with the dual objective of providing solutions to emerging food and agricultural challenges and creating high value biofuels and platform chemicals from agricultural and diary wastes)beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year.

The mission of the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences (SEEMS) is to provide students a unique integrative education and training experience that prepares them to meet the challenges and opportunities in the multiple dimensions of contemporary coastal, environmental, and earth sciences. This experience includes providing research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students that generate new knowledge and formulate effective solutions for a sustainable Rio Grande Valley and beyond. The school promotes collaborative, multi-disciplinary research and seeks participation of other sciences and disciplines interested in applying interdisciplinary perspectives to understanding of earth-environmental systems and their interactions with society (i.e., integrating biological, chemical, physical, and geospatial sciences with engineering, socioeconomics, law and policy).

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
