Job Summary
The Department of Mathematics invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 9-month, fixed-term Assistant Professor of Practice position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
The Professor of Practice in Actuarial Science will support the Department of Mathematics mission in research and scholarship; general education for undergraduate and graduate degrees; service to the public; and service to the local, national, and international professional communities in the area of Actuarial Sciences. The Professor of Practice will develop and maintain external contacts with the insurance and financial industries, and with the leading actuarial professional societies, such as the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society. The Professor of Practice will be responsible for promoting the actuarial program at the Oregon State University, help students in their preparation for professional exams administered by the Society of Actuaries, and in securing industrial internships. The Professor of Practice will support the online courses designated for the students in actuarial sciences offered via Ecampus, the online education unit of Oregon State University.
All professors of practice in the College of Science and the Department of Mathematics are expected to demonstrate effectiveness in teaching, advising, and other instructional activities; achievement in scholarship and creative activity that establishes the individual as a significant and distinguished contributor to the field or profession; and an appropriate balance of institutional and professional service. All professorial rank faculty members are expected to make significant contributions to both undergraduate and graduate education and to engage in activities that contribute to ongoing professional growth. All faculty members are expected to maintain high standards of collegiality and professional integrity, to demonstrate willingness to cooperate in assignments, and to demonstrate commitment to enhancing diversity and promoting inclusivity in the department, the institution, and the profession.

What You Will Need
  • PhD in Mathematics or related field
  • Hold, or on track to obtain by the second year since employment, the Associate level in the Society of Actuaries, Casualty Actuarial Society or an equivalent international Actuarial Professional society.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
