Position Description:

The Division of Pediatric Pathology and the Division of Clinical Pathology within the Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), are seeking a full-time academic hematopathologist.  The successful candidate should hold an MD/DO degree, qualify for an unrestricted Wisconsin medical license, and be board-certified or –eligible in hematopathology. This position includes a full-time faculty appointment in the Department of Pathology at MCW at a rank and salary commensurate with experience.

The successful candidate will find themselves in an enriching environment with myriad clinical and research opportunities spanning the whole spectrum of academic hematopathology. Clinical responsibilities will include service work in both pediatric (~60% at Children’s Wisconsin [CW]) and adult hematopathology (~40% at Froedtert Hospital) with shared call responsibilities. Administrative responsibilities include directing the CW Hematology, Coagulation, and Flow Cytometry Laboratories. Academic responsibilities will include teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows and participation in clinical, translational, or basic science research. Protected time commensurate with nonclinical responsibilities will be provided.

The candidate will primarily be based at CW, located in Milwaukee, WI, which is a nationally recognized and ranked 297 bed pediatric hospital serving as the only free-standing pediatric children’s hospital in the state of Wisconsin. The pediatric hematology/oncology program sees approximately 60-70 new leukemia patients each year as well as 40-50 new solid tumor diagnoses and robustly enrolls patients in Children’s Oncology Group and other clinical trials. CWis designated as a Level I Children’s Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons and has active heart, liver, and kidney transplant programs. CW was also the third pediatric hospital in the country designated as a “Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence.”

The remainder of the candidate’s clinical service will be at Froedtert Hospital, a 735 bed adult hospital which serves as the primary teaching affiliate for MCW and includes five regional hospitals within its system. The adult hematopathology service handles approximately 2100 in-house bone marrow specimens, 4200 flow cytometry studies, and 500 in-house tissue specimens, as well as a substantial additional volume of second opinion cases from outside facilities.  The department’s training programs encompass 16 AP/CP residency slots, two one-year hematopathology fellowship positions, and additional fellowship programs in various subspecialty areas.

The successful candidate will have a dual reporting relationship to the directors of both adult clinical pathology and pediatric pathology, and be based in the Division of Pediatric Pathology which encompasses services in anatomic pathology, hematology, flow cytometry, molecular testing, clinical chemistry, and microbiology at CW. It offers subspecialty expertise in hematopathology, cytopathology, neuropathology, dermatopathology, pediatric solid tumor pathology, vascular malformations, and perinatal/placental pathology. The division has an ACGME-accredited pediatric pathology fellowship program, and AP/CP residents routinely rotate on service. It annually handles over 7,000 surgical pathology & cytopathology specimens, 150 bone marrow specimens, and 60 autopsies. The CHW Laboratory performs over 900,000 tests each year including specialized coagulation testing and rapid thromboelastography. The Division also oversees shared resources of the Children’s Research Institute, including core histology and imaging laboratories and a pediatric tissue & serum bank that contains over 1500 bone marrow specimens from children with leukemia and lymphoma.
