Position:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Organic Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will teach introductory and general chemistry at the undergraduate level, and organic chemistry and special topics at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  This individual will have research interests in organic materials chemistry, computational organic chemistry, and/or physical organic chemistry.

In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the College and Department for recommending tenure and promotion. Given CSUN’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement in a diverse environment, the successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

Required Qualifications:  

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in chemistry from an accredited institution, with thesis research in organic chemistry
  • Evidence of, or clear potential for, excellence in teaching undergraduate courses
  • High-caliber research experience in organic materials chemistry, computational organic chemistry, and/or physical organic chemistry
  • Record of publication in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals
  • Well thought-out, robust plan of independent research activity that includes strategies for generating and publishing data in top-tier journals, recruiting students, and obtaining extramural funding

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of effective, equitable engagement with a diverse student body in the context of teaching, research, and student mentorship
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality, student-centered classroom instruction
  • Contributions to grant proposal writing
  • Postdoctoral research or industrial experience
  • Willingness to collaborate with departmental colleagues in research
