Position Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the Department of Mathematics at UNC is to advance the frontier of mathematics and its applications, to disseminate that knowledge, and to educate and empower the next generation of mathematicians for careers spanning academia, the private sector, and government. The Department is committed to building and nourishing collaborations across UNC as well as local, regional, and national partners in the academic, public, and private sectors. The Department has recognized strengths in research and education at all levels, providing a vibrant and inclusive environment for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral scholars. The Department is strongly committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, including active embrace of historically underrepresented groups in STEM.
Position Summary
The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC Chapel Hill) has established a School of Data Science and Society (SDSS) in 2022. This new school aims to contribute to the burgeoning field of data-oriented modeling and analysis, to solve pressing problems in healthcare, business, transportation, engineering, and other domains, and to study the implications of the usage of data science tools on society at large. The school will also be developing a core curriculum for training the next generation of data scientists at the undergraduate and graduate level. Given the highly interdisciplinary nature of this field, the SDSS and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of UNC Chapel Hill are planning a cluster hire to attract outstanding tenure track faculty whose research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of data science and Mathematics (MATH), Statistics & Operations Research (STOR), or Computer Science (CS). These joint hires will have their tenure homes in the MATH, STOR, or CS Department in the CAS, depending on their core area of expertise, but will hold a half-time appointment at SDSS and contribute to their teaching and research mission as well. New hires will be helping to build undergraduate and graduate programs with a strong quantitative core as well as many interdisciplinary options. As a part of this overarching initiative to deepen and expand research and teaching related to data science, applications are being invited at the ranks of Assistant or Associate Professors – with a starting date of July 01, 2023. The MATH department has core strengths in the mathematics of data science (algebra, analysis, geometry, optimization, scientific computation, stochastic modeling) with interests in a variety of data-driven applications spanning biology, imaging, materials science, and medicine. We welcome candidates with expertise in these or related strengths anchored in mathematics. Examples of areas of specialization we seek include but are not limited to the geometry of data, topological data analysis, mechanistic AI, computational linear algebra in machine learning, computational harmonic analysis of data, and all aspects of imaging. The successful applicants will be integral to development and delivery of a mathematically rich curriculum in data science and to building upon collaborations within MATH, CS, STOR, CAS and SDSS. Candidates must possess a PhD in Mathematics or closely related field by the start date of the appointment. Applicants must also have a strong record of research, teaching, and service commensurate with the level of the appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to direct an independent research program supported by external funding, to develop and participate in curriculum building initiatives, and to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in coordination with MATH, CS, STOR, CAS, and SDSS. We will begin considering candidates after January 27, 2023 and candidates with all required materials submitted at that time will be given full consideration. However, we will continue accepting applications until the position is filled.
