JOB SUMMARY:

Adelphi Department of Theatre invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Performance (Acting and Directing). We seek candidates who will be committed to collaborating with current faculty in maintaining and cultivating a forward-thinking pedagogy for training diverse, multifaceted theatre artists. Candidates must be able to engage in inclusive teaching strategies for both contemporary and classical actor training. Faculty’s teaching load is 18 credits per year.  They typically teach three courses a semester in a two-semester academic year. This position begins August 2024 and incorporates both student instruction and directing departmental productions.

 

The successful candidate would teach Department of Theatre courses that include: modern scene study, acting (styles), text analysis, directing and additional courses in the candidate’s area of interest (e.g., Meisner, Laban, Intimacy, Stage Dialects). Additionally, they would direct one departmental production per academic year.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:


1.    Candidates must be able to engage in inclusive teaching strategies for both contemporary and classical actor training.

2.    Faculty are expected to participate in the day- to-day life of the department (e.g. advising, committee work, recruitment) as a student advocate and mentor.

3.    Faculty must be able to maintain a vibrant professional, creative or scholarly research agenda.

4.    Additional duties include mentoring students, serving on department and college committees, participating in student recruitment and advising.


QUALIFICATIONS:

 


Required:

Qualified candidates will:


  • Hold a terminal degree (M.F.A., or Ph.D.) in the appropriate theatre discipline (Acting or Directing).
  • Maintain a robust professional artistic resume.
  • Have at least three years teaching experience full-time or five years of experience teaching part-time in a university or college setting.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to staying abreast of current professional standards and industry trends.
  • Provide evidence of supporting, teaching, and/or mentoring emerging artists in the classroom and the field.
  • Demonstrate the capacity to apply diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the classroom, in production, and to the academic community.
  • Engage in consensus-based collaboration with students, staff, and faculty.

  • The department is further interested in candidates that possess:


  • Demonstrated record of success in directing, including the development of new work, devising and styles of theatre.
  • Demonstrated record of success in teaching multiple levels of Acting/Directing training.
  • Professional experience that connects our students to the industry, professional theatres, and grad school programs.
  • Additional experience in one or more of the following areas:  Intimacy, Movement-based training (Laban, Alexander), Meisner, Devising, Community Engagement, non-western techniques or other areas of scholarship.
  • SDC, AEA or SAG membership.

    SALARY INFORMATION:

     

    In compliance with New York’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $75,000 - $77,500. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. An annual base salary higher than the range may be warranted in circumstances where a candidate has demonstrable equivalent prior higher education experience at another University.
