The Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver (DU) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of the Practice position in the Department of Management starting no later than September 1, 2024.

The Management Department is an academic unit of the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver in Colorado. DU is the oldest independent university in the Rocky Mountain region, with approximately 12,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. DU is classified as an R1: Doctoral/Research University with very high research activity. Times Higher Education and U.S. News & World Report have ranked DU among the nation’s top 100 universities.

The Daniels College of Business is the one of the largest colleges within the University, with 1,800 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students, and is eighth oldest collegiate business program in the U.S. Holding AACSB accreditation since 1923, the College offers a variety of majors and minors. Degree programs include two bachelor’s degrees, four MBA degree programs, seven specialized master’s degrees, and an executive PhD program. The Management Department, consisting of 16 full-time faculty members, offers an undergraduate BSBA major in management, a management minor, an MS in Management, and provides core classes for the MBA, executive PhD, and other degree programs within the College. The Daniels College of Business is widely recognized for its focus on business ethics.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Management Department Chair, the successful candidate will have responsibility for teaching courses within the field of management, advancing the visibility and reputation of the management department and Daniels College of Business in the business community, and contributing to service responsibilities.

We are open to applicants from all areas of management, including organizational behavior, strategic management, organization theory, human resource management, and leadership. At the Assistant Professor of the Practice rank, the appointment is initially a one-year contract, renewable up to an additional two years pending satisfactory performance. Additional contracts may be awarded following a formal performance review.

Essential Functions

Teaching:

The Assistant Professor of the Practice is a non-tenure track line and is expected to teach eight courses throughout the academic year, which may include summer, fall, winter, or spring quarters in the area of management. Courses may be undergraduate, graduate, and executive education level using traditional, hybrid and online delivery methods. Teaching responsibilities may involve day, night and weekend classes.

The Assistant Professor of the Practice is expected to attend all scheduled class sessions and participate in curriculum and pedagogy development, which might include establishing learning objectives and syllabi. Teachers are also responsible for timely and consistent grading, classroom management, student advising, student meetings and mentoring, testing/quizzing, instructional assessment, and professional development in educational topics.

Research, Scholarship, or Creative Work:

The Assistant Professor of the Practice is expected to engage in professional and/or academic efforts to maintain intellectual currency and represent the University and Daniels towards industry. For example, relevant activities might involve publishing articles in reputable industry journals or in peer-reviewed journals, high-profile speaking engagements, presentations or keynotes at professional conferences, etc.

Service:

Faculty members are expected to participate in department and college faculty meetings and engage in service activities. Additionally, the Assistant Professor of the Practice is encouraged to be professionally engaged through either industry or academic affiliations and to help serve on committees, curricula design, and assurance of learning, and assuming other duties as assigned and/or needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven portfolio of business skills, developmental experiences, and leadership successes in human resource roles and/or other key organizational roles.
  • Master’s degree in an area of management or a closely related field.
  • 10 years of professional experience in management roles.
  • Must carry, or have demonstrated potential to carry, exceptional connections to practice.
  • Demonstrated potential teaching, mentoring, or training excellence in an area of management or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong English communication skills (written and oral).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active in the business community (e.g., through association memberships, consulting projects, presentations, and other indications of high-level business engagement).
  • Experience teaching at an AACSB accredited institution with excellent teaching evaluations.
  • Demonstrated experience and accomplishments in teaching graduate and undergraduate business courses.
  • Experience learning and teaching others to use new technology.
  • Ability to engage with industry partners for advancing the College’s mission.
  • Terminal degree (DBA or Ph.D.) in business or a closely related field.

Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Ability to sit or stand in front of a classroom for an extended period of time.
3. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
While the University's administrative offices are open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar ).

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $110,000 - $120,000.
