The School of Visual, Performing and Design Arts (SVPDA) invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, fixed-term, Assistant Professor of Teaching in Music Theory position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the School Head.
Appointment at the Assistant rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
Candidates must demonstrate potential for successful undergraduate teaching and evidence of scholarly productivity. One or more years of full-time teaching experience (beyond the graduate assistant level) is preferred, as is a secondary area of expertise such as composition, performance, music education, or music technology.
The faculty member appointed will teach core music theory and aural skills classes and will help to develop and maintain the music theory curriculum. Opportunities will exist for teaching advanced-level music classes as well as colloquia in OSU's Honors College. We anticipate that the person in this position will bring a broad range of expertise, repertoires, and methodologies to the role and will contribute to the diversity of curriculum and research in the School. Cross-disciplinary collaborations in teaching and research is encouraged. The faculty member in this role will be expected to maintain an active scholarly output and profile.
Oregon State University offers rigorous programs in music performance, music education, and music technology and production leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Music degree; minors in music, production, and performance; and an online major in Contemporary Music Industry through OSU's highly regarded Ecampus. The arts are uniquely and prominently featured at OSU, with new opportunities emerging in the Huang Collaborative Innovation Center's Extended Reality Theatre and the opening of the Patricia Valian Reser Center for Creative Arts (PRAx), which will serve as the new performance home for the School.

Requirements :

  • Doctoral level degree (in hand by start date).
  • Demonstrable knowledge of music theory and aural skills.
  • Knowledge of current music theory topics, curriculum, and pedagogy.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate students.
  • Record of scholarly achievement and potential that aligns with an R1 research institution.
  • Record of and/or demonstrated interest in engaging, educating, and mentoring a diverse group of learners and enhancing diversity through teaching, outreach, or programming.
  • Ability to work collegially with other faculty, staff, and students.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
